Renaissance architecture
Home Library Miscellaneous Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Style of architecture, reflecting the rebirth of Classical culture, that originated in Florence in the early 15th century and spread throughout Europe, replacing the medieval Gothic style. There was a revival of ancient Roman forms, including the column and round arch, the tunnel vault , and the dome. The basic design element was the order . Knowledge of Classical architecture came from the ruins of ancient buildings and the writings of Vitruvius . As in the Classical period, proportion was the most important factor of beauty; Renaissance architects found a harmony between human proportions and buildings. This concern for proportion resulted in clear, easily comprehended space and mass, which distinguishes the Renaissance style from the more complex Gothic. Filippo Brunelleschi is considered the first Renaissance architect.

Instant Cities: Emergent Trends in Architecture and Urbanism in the Arab World
1-3 April, 2008 American University of Sharjah, UAE Organized by: The Center for the Study of Architecture in the Arab Region In Collaboration with School of Architecture and Design, American University of Sharjah , UAE
Keynote Speakers: Anthony D. King, Emeritus Professor, State University of New York, USA Speech title Thinking Through Cities: Identities, Modernities, Globalities Besim S. Hakim, Consultant and an independent scholar, USA Speech title Eco-Policies and Generative Programs for Sustainable Cities
Introduction Throughout the Arab region, rapid urbanization fueled by speculation and geopolitical transformations have had a significant impact on architecture. The flow of people, goods and capital into the Gulf states has prompted fundamental changes resulting from economic growth and diversification intended to lessen the dependence on oil revenues. As a result of its ability to entice investors and instantly translate funds into real estate ventures, Dubai has become a prime example and a potential focus of study. Architects and planners struggle to adapt to processes of rapid change and there seems to be little time for reflection on the long-term socio-cultural or environmental consequences of current practices.
While the conference is primarily concerned with conditions in the Gulf, organizers invite contributions that address how rapid urbanization affects the production of architecture and the lives of inhabitants throughout the Arab region and beyond.

The empire endured for more than a millennium , dramatically influencing Medieval and Renaissance era architecture in Europe and, following the capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks in 1453, leading directly to the architecture of the Ottoman Empire

edit Characteristics of Egyptian Architecture
Due to the scarcity of wood, the two predominant building materials used in ancient Egypt were sun-baked mud brick and stone , mainly limestone, but also sandstone and granite in considerable quantities. From the Old Kingdom onward, stone was generally reserved for tombs and temples , while bricks were used even for royal palaces, fortresses, the walls of temple precincts and towns, and for subsidiary buildings in temple complexes. Ancient Egyptian houses were made out of mud collected from the Nile river. It was placed in molds and left to dry in the hot sun to harden for use in construction.

Stylistically, Renaissance architecture followed Gothic architecture and was succeeded by Baroque architecture The Renaissance style places emphasis on symmetry proportion , geometry and the regularity of parts as they are demonstrated in the architecture of classical antiquity and in particular ancient Roman architecture , of which many examples remained. Orderly arrangements of columns pilasters and lintels , as well as the use of semicircular arches, hemispherical domes niches and aedicules replaced the more complex proportional systems and irregular profiles of medieval buildings.

The Department of architecture offers an MA in Architectural History.
    http://www.architecture.ed.ac.uk/
    Welcome
Architecture and Landscape Architecture are disciplines dedicated to the art of building in its broadest sense. This encompasses the design of buildings, the spaces between them, as well as wider natural and urban environments. This definition implies a wide range of conditions: from the most intimate spaces of a dwelling, to complex public infrastructures and open spaces, to the heterogenous fabric of a city and wider territorial conditions.
This scope brings architecture and landscape architecture into contact with other
disciplines concerned with buildings, cities and open spaces, such as engineering,
construction, urban planning, environmental science, art history, and sociology. Architecture and Landscape Architecture necessarily engage with all of these neighbouring disciplines, but they are distinctive for their commitment to design as their specialist skill and knowledge base. Design is a mode of thinking and practice that combines historical and environmental knowledges, logical analysis and creativity. The Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA), treasures the distinctiveness of design, and seeks to put it to work in critical, responsible, and
creative ways in the diverse conditions of contemporary metropolitan life.
