Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the field devoted to building artificial animals (or at least artificial creatures that in suitable contexts appear to be animals) and, for many, artificial persons (or at least artificial creatures that in suitable contexts appear to be persons). Such goals immediately ensure that AI is a discipline of considerable interest to many philosophers, and this has been confirmed (e.g.) by the energetic attempt, on the part of numerous philosophers, to show that these goals are in fact un/attainable. On the constructive side, many of the core formalisms and techniques used in AI come out of, and are indeed still much used and refined in, philosophy: first-order logic, intensional logics suitable for the modeling of doxastic attitudes and deontic reasoning, inductive logic, probability theory and probabilistic reasoning, practical reasoning and planning, and so on. In light of this, some philosophers conduct AI research and development as philosophy.

UAI-2000: The Sixteenth Conference on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence
Stanford University, Stanford, CA
June 30 - July 3, 2000
As we approach the new millenium, advances in the theory and practice of artificial intelligence have pushed intelligent systems to the forefront of the information technology sector. At the same time, uncertainty managament has come to play a central role in the development of these systems. The Conference on Uncertainty in Artificial intelligence, organized annually under the auspices of the Association for Uncertainty in AI (AUAI) , is the premier international forum for exchanging results on the use of principled uncertain-reasoning methods in intelligent systems. The Sixteenth Conference on Uncertainty in Artificial, UAI-2000, will be held from June 30 - July 3, 2000, at Stanford University. The main technical program will be run from July 1-3, with UAI's regular tutorial program and several workshops to be held on June 30. As in 1998 in Madison, WI, this year the conference will be co-located with the International Conference on Machine Learning and the Conference on Compuational Learning theory. Registrants to any of COLT, ICML, or UAI will be allowed to attend, without additional cost, the technical sessions of the other two conferences.

What is Artificial Intelligence?
Definition...
A rtificial Intelligence is a branch of Science which deals with helping machines find solutions to complex problems in a more human-like fashion. This generally involves borrowing characteristics from human intelligence, and applying them as algorithms in a computer friendly way. A more or less flexible or efficient approach can be taken depending on the requirements established, which influences how artificial the intelligent behaviour appears. AI is generally associated with Computer Science , but it has many important links with other fields such as Maths Psychology Cognition Biology and Philosophy , among many others. Our ability to combine knowledge from all these fields will ultimately benefit our progress in the quest of creating an intelligent artificial being. Further details...

Artificial Intelligence
AI, or artificial intelligence, is a division of computer science that explores intelligent behavior, learning and adaptation in machines. The idea of automating tasks that currently require intelligent behavior is the basis for most research in the field of artificial intelligence. Providing solutions to real life problems through the production of artificial intelligence software or machines is the ultimate goal. Artificial intelligence systems have many practical uses in business, from organizing operations to investing in stocks. Many of these applications are made up of networks similar to the neurons in a human brain, which are known to do extremely well in pattern recognition. The attacks on 9/11 have brought about much renewed interest and funding for artificial intelligence research. New research in threat-detection, including machine vision research and data-mining, is aimed at helping to solidify our nation’s security. Other examples of how artificial intelligence is used include software applications and spam filtering solutions. The development of traditional strategy games like computer chess and other video games also use AI.

78. Artificial Intelligence [Internet Encyclopedia Of Philosophy]
Artificial Intelligence. Artificial intelligence (AI) would be the possession of intelligence, or the exercise of thought, by machines such as computers.
http://www.iep.utm.edu/art-inte/
Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy
Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence in vitro fertilization or ectogenesis. And if nonhuman animals think, we wish to exclude them from the machines, too. More particularly, the AI thesis should be understood to hold that thought, or intelligence, can be produced by artificial means; made, not grown. For brevity’s sake, we will take “machine” to denote just the artificial ones. Since the present interest in thinking machines has been aroused by a particular kind of machine, an electronic computer or digital computer, present controversies regarding claims of artificial intelligence center on these. weak AI grants the fact (or prospect) of intelligent-acting machines; strong AI says these actions can be real intelligence. Strong AI says some artificial computation is thought. Computationalism says that all thought is computation. Though many strong AI advocates are computationalists, these are logically independent claims: some artificial computation being thought is consistent with some thought not being computation, contra computationalism. All thought being computation is consistent with some computation (and perhaps all artificial computation) not being thought.
