Electrical Engineering
Department Overview
AE100R Paul Allen Center Electrical engineering is concerned with the understanding and utilization of electricity and with providing society useful, efficient, and economic products and services. It encompasses everything from batteries and power supplies to crystal fabrication, autonomous robots, and devices that can recognize human speech. Electrical engineers design, produce, study, and operate all manner of devices and systems that use electric and electromagnetic energy. They also work on systems at the macro scale of electric power grids and at the micro scale of nanotechnology. Contemporary society is in the midst of an information revolution, created in large part from the fruits of electrical engineering. Rapid improvements in communication technologies, computer visualization, and information access continue to have a significant impact on manufacturing, medicine, transportation, and environmental monitoring. Dramatic advances in personal communication services, digital imaging, and network hardware and software are changing the texture of everyday life for an increasing portion of the world's population.

About me
I was born in Cholargos, Attika (Greece) and I grew up in Pyrgos, Elia. I attended the University of Patras (Greece) as an undergraduate in 1996, obtaining a first class honours degree in electrical and computer engineering and receiving the prestigious scholarship from the I. Latsis Foundation. In October 2001, I started my Ph.D. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), UK. My research involved the development of a novel near-infrared spectrometer for non-intrusive life-science measurements and it was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council ( EPSRC ). Since October 2004, I have been a member of the Systems Biology group at the Hamilton Institute National University of Ireland, Maynooth . I am now head of the Hamilton Institute's Image to Mathematical Model Transition ( IMMT ) team, a part of a National Biophotonics and Imaging Platform (

Yasser Ghanbari Ph.D. Candidate Electrical Engineering Introduction Education Publication Courses ... Vita I am now a Ph.D. candidate in electrical engineering at Southern Methodist University , Dallas, TX, working under supervision of Prof. Panos Papamichalis on analysis of neural action potentials for detection, feature extraction, and clustering of neural waveforms, commonly referred to as spike sorting. I received my B.S. degree from Sharif University of Technology , Tehran, Iran, in 2002, and the M.S. degree from University of Mazandaran , Mazandaran, Iran, in 2005, both in electrical and electronics engineering. During the summer of 2007, I was with Plexon Inc , where I worked on development of an advanced MATLAB graphical environment for temporal and spectral analysis of the local field potential (LFP) signal of the brain as well as real-time temporal and spectral (both spectrum and spectrogram) analysis, and visualization of such signals. I also worked with Plexon on synchronous filter design for removal of power-line noise interfering with the low-frequency components of the neural signals in summer 2008. During spring and summer 2009, and summer 2010, I worked at
