The Newcomen Society is the world's oldest learned society devoted to the study of the history of engineering and technology. The Society is based in London and is concerned with all branches of engineering: civil, mechanical, electrical, structural, aeronautical, marine, chemical and manufacturing. Original research papers are given at regular evening meetings held at the Science Museum in London; these papers are subsequently published in the Transactions of the Newcomen Society . Our Transactions form an extensive archive with a strong academic foundation. This archive is now available on line Our six branches hold evening meetings, at regional centres. We also organise conferences and visits to places of interest in the UK and abroad. All are most welcome to apply for membership The Newcomen Society

Search for oldest known photo of people at work Professor Perrett will argue that history has focussed on the inventors, engineers, and the machines they created, so we tend to have limited understanding of how they were used in practice, and few images of the people who operated them. He is keen to hear from anyone who knows of any photographs of people at work in Greater Manchester or elsewhere, which were taken earlier than 1860. Professor Perrett said: “Historians have tended to place a lot of emphasis on big name engineers, but little attention to the engineers and skilled workers who actually worked them. I’m interested in trying to get a picture of the people behind the machines and I’ve found there is very limited evidence. Early photography meant that people had to stand very still to have their pictures taken, which wasn’t very compatible with people working. I’d really like to hear from anyone who knows of any early photographs of people at work in industry in the Manchester area, so please do get in touch!” According to Professor Perrett, the first known photograph of people at work in Britain was taken in Sheffield in 1858. Another early example is a picture by Arthur Munby, which depicts female workers in Wigan’s Rose Bridge Pits in 1865, while an anonymous picture survives of Shevington Pithead, taken in 1863. There are also several examples around Britain of images of people at work which are embedded in architecture. In Manchester, the former fish market entrance, dating back to 1876, shows life-like images of fishermen at work.

Thomas Newcomen - Definition
Thomas Newcomen (baptized February 24 August 5 ), blacksmith and inventor - though he called himself an 'ironmonger' - was born in Dartmouth Devon England . Thomas Newcomen is frequently referred to as the father of the industrial revolution as its first innovator and entrepreneur In Newcomen, with his business partner Thomas Savery , built an atmospheric steam engine for pumping water out of mines , from coal mines to the tin mines of Newcomen's native south-west England, particularly in Cornwall The Newcomen engine was first used near at the Conygree coalworks near Dudley in the West Midlands in 1712. A working replica has been constructed at the Black Country Living Museum there. Further engines were installed by Newcomen himself in mines in the Midlands, north Wales and Cumbria , with over 100 built before the patent expired in . The design was later improved by James Watt In London in , a learned society to promote and encourage the study of the history of engineering and technology was formed, called the Newcomen Society , after Thomas Newcomen. An American branch was established in

ASHET, the Australian Society for History of Engineering and Technology, was formed with thirty members in 2003. ASHET now has around one hundred members, in all parts of Australia, though the majority live in Sydney. ASHET is a non-profit association incorporated in New South Wales. It is affiliated with the Royal Australian Historical Society. Its objects are to encourage and promote community interest and education in the history of engineering and technology in Australia. ASHET presents a regular program of around ten meetings each year in Sydney in association with the Royal Australian Historical Society with talks on topics related to the history of engineering and technology. Non-members are welcome to attend these meetings. ASHET also organises visits and tours to places of interest. In 2009 ASHET ran, in association with the RAHS, a two-week study tour of outback New South Wales including Broken Hill, Wentworth and Lake Mungo.

GUY CARLANDER Guy Anton Carlander left his architectural thumbprint on buildings in Amarillo and around the country. He was responsible for the art deco designs of schools, courthouses and landmark buildings and also designed many of the hotel for the Santa Fe Railway Co. Art deco, a geometric architectural style from the late 1920s and 1930s, flourishes in tiny Texas Panhandle towns, thanks to Carlander's use of the style. He trained in Chicago and liked to keep in contact with big city architectural styles, according to a Texas Tech University survey of the history of engineering and technology in 1984. "His goal in life was to make Amarillo the biggest city between Dallas and Denver," Anna Morales, a Texas Tech researcher, told United Press International in a 1984 interview. "Art deco - it looks big city. It's so jazzy, so trendy." Carlander sometimes incorporated frontier scenes in his art deco buildings. Examples of his work are found in the courthouses in Potter, Collingsworth and Cottle counties.

Good books to curl up with: a review of the best recent writing on the history of engineering and technology BY FREDERIC D. To make them easier to get hold of, we have made it possible to order them through us: See the box at the end of the facing page. by Carroll Pursell, Johns Hopkins University Press, 358 pages, $45.00. CODE: JHP-3 Photographs by O. Winston Link and text by Thomas H. Carver, Harry N. Abrams, 144 pages, $49.50. CODE: ABS-8 Steam, Steel, and Stars The Last Steam Railroad in America is well worth the hefty price. by Stephen L. McFarland, Smithsonian Institution Press, 312 pages, $29.95. CODE: SIP-3 World War II Army fliers, using their celebrated Norden bombsights, achieved mixed results at best: A typical raid saw fewer than half its bombs land within 1,000 feet of the target. As a result, the Army often resorted to area bombing, in which masses of planes dropped huge loads of ordnance in hopes of hitting something. For their much smaller targets, Navy pilots got around the accuracy problem with dive bombing, which was a lot more lethal for those on both ends of the attack.
