Human Factors Home Welcome What are Human Factors and Ergonomics?
Human Factors and Ergonomics are the study of how to create things and processes that effectively support people in their work and living activities. They are essential considerations in making technological systems safe, effective, easy and enjoyable to use. Where are Human Factos Used?
Human Factors are relevant in all things that people use or touch, all things with which they interact, and all activities in which they participate. They are a part of:
  • Physical systems such as cell phones, blood sugar monitoring meters, and building designs; Information systems such as web pages, web tools that support the formation of virtual communities, and the controls and displays in the cockpits of automobiles and airplanes; Management systems , such as training programs, systems of recognition and reward for tasks well done.
In short, human factors are everywhere. See more examples of human factors uses. Human Factors and Ergonomics Graduate Minor Program

My field is Human Factors, which is the study of people in the work place (every work place), with the goal of redesigning tasks and equipment to better suit the range of individuals performing them. The field is very broad (which is why I like it), and includes many aspects of design engineering, perceptual psychology, anthropometrics, cognitive psychology, kinesiology, social psychology, and medicine. My research has focussed on the benefits and usability issues of stereoscopic displays, particularly with regards to teleoperation and augmented reality displays. With my colleagues

Welcome The San Jose State University Human Factors and Ergonomics Master's Degree Program is an interdisciplinary degree program that prepares students for practice in their emerging profession through a course sequence that emphasizes theory,
practical applications, and research. Human Factors/ Ergonomics students take a group of five core courses from several different San Jose State University departments and elective courses in topics of their choosing. The program culminates in a major project or thesis. Courses in this program are usually offered in the evening, allowing students to complete the program on a full or part-time basis.

Handbook of human factors and ergonomics
I'm often asked for reading suggestions, especially for references to the literature on Human Factors and Ergonomics. In the past few months, I have been reading chapters of one book that has it all: Gavriel Salvendy's massive tome, the Handbook of human factors and ergonomics . It is huge, with over 1,500 pages and 61 chapters. It takes two pages just to list the advisors, ten pages to list the authors of the chapters. It is also expensive: $250.
