Department Home Page Mechanical Engineering Mechanical Engineering (ME) is one of the most dynamic and exciting engineering disciplines. According to a recent survey published by the US News and World Report (2008), Mechanical Engineering is by far the most popular undergraduate degree in engineering. At the graduate level, ME ranks first in popularity among engineering doctoral students. The field of Mechanical engineering covers the design and analysis of all kinds of systems and technologies with mechanical components, and has applications in energy production, environmental systems, materials, composites, transportation, robotics, manufacturing, machine design, and many more areas. Several key emerging technologies fall fundamentally within the domain of mechanical engineering expertise. Among these technologies are micro- and nano-scale fabrication processes, energy, and the environment. Modern mechanical engineers can navigate virtual design environments and are adept in computing so they play a significant role in the future development of information technology. This is reflected in the portfolio of current activities in the department, one that has widened rapidly in the past decade. Today, our faculty are involved in projects ranging from the use of nanoengineering to develop thermoelectric energy converters to the use of active control of for efficient combustion; from the design of miniature robots for extraterrestrial exploration to the creation of needle-free drug injectors; from the design of low-cost radio-frequency identification chips to the development of advance numerical simulation techniques; from the development of unmanned underwater vehicles to the invention of cost-effective photovoltaic cells; from the desalination of seawater to the fabrication of 3-D nanostructures out of 2-D substrates. Graduate Education MIT’s graduate programs in mechanical engineering attract students with a variety of backgrounds, interests, and talents. Engineering your Future The Mechanical Engineering (ME) program at CSU offers a curriculum that combines classroom learning with engineering practice. The ME program goal for students is to give our graduates the engineering skills to obtain leading positions in advanced technology fields. In the undergraduate program, a broad spectrum of classes is available for learning about the fundamentals of the mechanical engineering profession. Students not only learn about mechanical engineering analysis and design, they also gain valuable hands-on experience through class projects and application-oriented research. All senior ME students can participate in designing and building a capstone project that is part of a national senior design competition. Students also have the opportunity for research-based projects. Each project is based on a corporate model that provides students significant opportunities for leadership development and experiential learning. In the graduate program, MS and PhD students are integral members of research teams addressing global issues. Student researchers apply the fundamental concepts of mechanical engineering to aid in the development of new technology in areas which include: biofuels, clean engines, photovoltaic solar cells, battery technologies, materials science, bioengineering, plasmas and space propulsion, dynamics and controls, and motorsport engineering.
