Topics Definition of a 'robot' First use of the word 'robot' First use of the word 'robotics' Three Laws of Robotics ... Interresting Articles Definition of a 'Robot' According to the Robot Institute of America (1979) a robot is:
"A reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator designed to move material, parts, tools, or specialized devices through various programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks".
A more inspiring definition can be found in Webster. According to Webster a robot is:
"An automatic device that performs functions normally ascribed to humans or a machine in the form of a human." First use of the word 'robot' The acclaimed Czech playwright Karel Capek (1890-1938) made the first use of the word robot, from the Czech word for forced labor or serf. Capek was reportedly several times a candidate for the Nobel prize for his works and very influential and prolific as a writer and playwright.
The use of the word Robot was introduced into his play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots)

Infiniband
by nathan on Jul.30, 2009, under Hardware Infiniband is an often overlooked technology outside of the supercomputer / clustering space. I think that is a shame given some of the amazing aspects of this technology. Infiniband is a serial connection with a raw full duplex data rate of 2.5 Gbit/s known as 1x single data rate (SDR) mode. In addition to a double data rate (DDR) and a quad data rate (QDR) mode, links can be aggregated in units of 4 or 12 paths yielding up to 120 Gbit/s in 12X QDR mode. In a day where server motherboards are just starting to see 10 Gibt/s ethernet cards, the most common “low speed” infiniband options is 10 Gbit/s 4X SDR cards. Infiniband uses remote direct memory access (RDMA) for data transfer allowing data to be moved between hosts directly without any CPU cycles. All of this happens in about 1/4 th the port to port speed of 10 Gbit/s ethernet!

Rich's Robot Musings
February 6, 2010, A few questions from some smart eight year olds in East LA. Let's start with the word robot. Karel Capek coined it in his 1921 play Rossum's Universal Robots. The word robota literally means work, labor or serf labor, and figuratively "drudgery" or "hard work" in Czech and many Slavic languages. Traditionally the robota was the work period a serf had to give for his lord, typically 6 months of the year (definition from Wikipedia). These robots were artificial people made in factories. They had no souls and hence could be enslaved without trouble to their creators human conscience. Ultimately they rose to destroy their human makers and eventually became extinct because there was no one left to make them. Isaac Asimovs I, Robot series is my favorite exploration of the robots of science fiction. Susan Calvin is the star of the series. She is a human psychologist studying robots.
The definition of robots as manufactured humans persisted until the mid 1950s when Joseph Engleberger called a machine he was trying to sell into the automobile industry a robot because the name sounded cool. Since then the word has been used to describe just about any computer-controlled, electro-mechanical machine. Note Capeks robots were biological creations; androids, rather than robots. For now, lets just call things made by humans that do the kind of work humans do a robot. Hmm, that definition includes my kids. Lets go with machines that do the kind of work humans do.

If you think robots are mainly the stuff of space movies, think again. Right now, all over the world, robots are on the move.
http://www.thetech.org/robotics/universal/index.html
Robots have been with us for less than 50 years, but the idea of inanimate creations to do our bidding is much, much older. The ancient Greek poet Homer described maidens of gold, metallic helpers for the Hephaistos, the Greek god of the forge. The golems of medieval Jewish legend were robot-like servants made of clay, brought to life by a spoken charm. Leonardo da Vinci drew plans for a mechanical man in 1495.

Much of this information is gleaned from the Robotics Internet Resources Page of LPR, UMass. , which in turn was created using the comp.robotics FAQ maintained by Kevin Dowling (nivek@cmu.edu) . or using Jonathan Fletcher's JumpStation and just plain WWW surfing. Reading comp.robotics.misc and comp.robotics.research also helped a lot. Try also VLSI and robotics lab of the Indiana University , or the U. of Central Florida , they are comprehensive overviews of robotics related WWW sites. Kevin Dowling has converted the FAQ into an easy-to-use Hypertext FAQ. If necessary, you can get the latest FAQ from the MIT archive .
