A technical standard is an established norm or requirement about technical systems. It is usually a formal document that establishes uniform engineering or technical criteria
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard
Standard
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search This article is about technical standards. For other uses, see Standard (disambiguation) A technical standard is an established norm or requirement about technical systems . It is usually a formal document that establishes uniform engineering or technical criteria, methods, processes and practices. In contrast, a custom, convention , company product, corporate standard, etc. which becomes generally accepted and dominant is often called a de facto standard A technical standard can also be a controlled artifact or similar formal means used for calibration . Reference Standards and certified reference materials have an assigned value by direct comparison with a reference base. A primary standard is usually under the jurisdiction of a national standards body. Secondary, tertiary, check standards and standard materials may be used for reference in a metrology system. A key requirement in this case is (metrological) traceability , an unbroken paper trail of calibrations back to the primary standard. A technical standard may be developed privately or unilaterally, for example by a corporation, regulatory body, military, etc. Standards can also be developed by groups such as trade unions, and trade associations.

Numeric representation of dates and time
The ISO solution to a long-standing source of confusion
So! Who remembers the Y2K bug? And the cries that the end of civilization as we know it is at hand? Was it all hype? Well, there were indeed serious fears that older IT equipment might recycle back to 1900 or not make it through the roll-over into the year 2000, because of the way they were programmed and dates were represented in that programming. It was less of a problem for more recent equipment, but this did not mean that a good, clean transition was guaranteed, and all IT users everywhere needed to check and verify their systems. So, all's well that ends well? Not quite! There is still the little bothersome business that in order to get from A to B, one can end up with an airline ticket that says you are travelling from A to C on, for example, 02-03-02, with a connecting train ticket from C to B carrying a date of 02-02-03. Has someone invented a time machine?

HEAD 35 Points Shape Profile Ears Eyes BODY/TAIL 35 Points Shape Legs/Feet Tail COAT 20 Points Length Texture COLOR 10 Points
the ACFA MAINE COON Standard
General:
The Maine Coon is a working cat, muscular, solid, medium to large in size with the look of the wild. This cat is a result of natural evolution, capable of surviving a harsh climate with little or no human assistance. Thus, this cat may be reserved initially toward strange people and new situations, yet the Maine Coon does have an amiable disposition. Males may be larger, females are usually smaller. Females should not be penalized because of this size difference. Allowance should be made for slow maturation, as a Maine Coon does not achieve ultimate type until three to four years of age. Type must not be sacrificed for size, or size for type.
Head: Shape: The head is medium in width and slightly longer than wide with allowance for broadening and jowls in males. Muzzle is square when viewed from any angle. Cheek bones are high. Chin must be firm and in line with nose and upper lip.

    THE DATING GAME
    by Nick Renton
This essay discusses the date formats used on this site. Every cheque, every invoice, every receipt and every entry in an accounting ledger bears a date. But few people give much thought as to the best way to write dates. Computer users in general and Internet surfers in particular will be familiar with a very annoying American habit. The United States practice is to express dates in the quite illogical month-day-year (MMDDYY) format. To show the month, which comes between the day and the year in order of magnitude, in this way is clearly absurd. Australia and the rest of the world mostly use day-month-year (DDMMYY). While better quality software often gives non-US users the choice of using a local date format web pages and many programs do not. Their authors adopt the typical American way of looking at everything parochially, not even recognising the ambiguity which their approach creates. Does 03/04/02 mean 3 April 2002 or 4 March 2002 (or perhaps even 2 April 2003)? However, there is a convenient way around this. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has laid down a standard, ISO 8601, which prescribes a new way for setting out dates. This is YYYY-MM-DD (for example, 2002-03-04) and it could be regarded as a metric date format suitable for use universally.

    why are standards important?
More and more people are gaining access to and using spatial information. The widespread use of spatial information is creating a need for standards. Consistent information and associated systems and services increase the reliability and effectiveness of the goods and services we use. There are three types of geospatial-related standards: Content standards including land use codes, surveyor codes, data dictionaries for cadastre, geographical place names, bathymetry Access standards Exchange standards including Geography Markup Language (GML), Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs, also known as URLs) ANZLIC promotes the use of standards for implementing various components of the ASDI. This is done in consultation with the official standards bodies such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
