Surveying
From LoveToKnow 1911
SURVEYING, the technical term for the art of determining the position of prominent points and other objects on the surface of the ground, for the purpose of making therefrom a graphic representation of the area surveyed. The general principles on which surveys are conducted and maps computed from such data are in all instances the same; certain measures are made on the ground, and corresponding measures are protracted on paper on whatever scale may be a convenient fraction of the natural scale. The method of surveying varies with the magnitude of the survey, which may embrace an empire or represent a small plot of land. All surveys rest primarily on linear measurements for the direct determination of distances; but linear measurement is often supplemented by angular measurement which enables distances to be determined by principles of geometry over areas which cannot be conveniently measured directly, such, for instance, as hilly or broken ground. The nature of the survey depends on the proportion which the linear and angular measures bear to one another and is almost always a combination of both.

They will have a chance to use some fine measuring instruments, apply advanced mathematics, operate computing equipment, and create a survey map.
    Requirements
  • Show that you know first aid for the types of injuries that could occur while surveying, including cuts, scratches, snakebite, insect stings, tick bites, heat and cold reactions, and dehydration. Explain to your counselor why a surveyor should be able to identify the poisonous plants and poisonous animals that are found in your area. Find and mark the corners of a five-sided lot that has been laid out by your counselor to fit the land available. Set an instrument over each of the corners and record the angle turned between each line and the distance measured between each corner. With the assistance of the counselor, compute the error of closure from the recorded notes. The error of closure must not be more than 5 feet. From the corners, take compass readings or turn angles to trees, shrubs, and rocks, and measure to them. All measurements should be made using instruments, methods, and accuracies consistent with current technology. From the field notes gathered for requirement 2, draw to scale a map of your survey. Submit a neatly drawn copy.

    Surveying
In the early 18th century, much of Virginia’s western countryside was imperfectly known and poorly mapped. Surveyors provided accurate descriptions that enabled the colonial government to grant out land to eager settlers. Peter Jefferson , Thomas’ father, worked as a surveyor and cartographer for most of his adult life. From 1745 until his death in 1757, he surveyed for the colony in one official capacity or another. Peter Jefferson’s more famous accomplishments included marking the location of the Fairfax line in 1746, extending in 1749 the boundary between North Carolina and Virginia, and helping produce in 1751 one of the first accurate maps of the colony of Virginia. He must have taught his son the finer points of surveying as he organized the fields of his Albemarle County farm. In June 1773, Thomas Jefferson followed in his father’s footsteps when he received a commission as surveyor of Albemarle County. Unlike his father, however, he discharged his duties through deputies and resigned the post the following year. When in 1778 he produced a sketch map of his native county, he did so for his own use, not for the public good.

Nature of the Work About this section
Surveyors, cartographers, photogrammetrists, and surveying and mapping technicians are responsible for measuring and mapping the Earth's surface. Surveyors establish official land, airspace, and water boundaries. They write descriptions of land for deeds, leases, and other legal documents; define airspace for airports; and take measurements of construction and mineral sites. Other surveyors provide data about the shape, contour, location, elevation, or dimension of land or land features.

    Definitions of Geomatics
As defined by the Canadian Institute of Geomatics in their quarterly journal "Geomatica" Geomatics is a field of activities which, using a systemic approach, integrates all the means used to acquire and manage spatial data required as part of scientific, administrative, legal and technical operations involved in the process of the production and management of spatial information. The definition of geomatics is evolving. A working definition might be "the art, science and technologies related to the management of geographically-referenced information." Geomatics includes a wide range of activities, from the acquisition and analysis of site-specific spatial data in engineering and development surveys to the application of GIS and remote sensing technologies in environmental management. It includes cadastral surveying, hydrographic surveying, and ocean mapping, and it plays an important role in land administration and land use management. [from UNB ] which is a very good read in whole. Geomatics is the modern scientific term referring to the integrated approach of measurement, analysis, management, storage and display of the descriptions and location of Earth-based data, often termed spatial data. These data come from many sources, including earth orbiting satellites, air and sea-borne sensors and ground based instruments. It is processed and manipulated with state-of-the-art information technology using computer software and hardware. It has applications in all disciplines which depend on spatial data, including environmental studies, planning, engineering, navigation, geology and geophysics, oceanography, land development and land ownership and tourism. It is thus fundamental to all the geoscience disciplines which use spatially related data.
