Arc welding
Home Library Science Sci-Tech Encyclopedia A welding process utilizing the concentrated heat of an electric arc to join metal by fusion of the parent metal and the addition of metal to the joint usually provided by a consumable electrode (see illustration). Electric current for the welding arc may be either direct or alternating, depending upon the material to be welded and the characteristics of the electrode used. The current source may be a rotating generator, rectifier , or transformer and must have transient and static volt-ampere characteristics designed for arc stability and weld performance.
Metallic welding arc. There are three basic welding methods: manual, semiautomatic , and automatic. Manual welding is the oldest method, and though its proportion of the total welding market diminishes yearly, it is still the most common. Here an operator takes an electrode, clamped in a hand-held electrode holder, and manually guides the electrode along the joint as the weld is made. Usually the electrode is consumable; as the tip is consumed, the operator manually adjusts the position of the electrode to maintain a constant arc length. Semiautomatic welding is becoming the most popular welding method. The electrode is usually a long length of small-diameter bare wire, usually in

Chapter 14 - DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR WELDING
Apart from resistance spot welding (RSW), three processes are most commonly used for welding metal stampings and fabrications: gas metal arc welding (GMAW) or MIG; gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) or TIG; and gas welding. Although a high initial investment is necessary, laser welding is being more widely employed by companies requiring large quantities of multi-point welds. This method employs robots, welding at speeds of up to 150 inches (3.8 m) per minute. Other processesplasma arc, ultrasonic, and electron beam weldingare also available, but these methods are usually restricted to welding of particular materials with special design requirements, such as microelectronic and aerospace components. Suitability for general sheet metal applications is limited, and processing may be cost-prohibitive. Figure 1. Schematic of basic MIG welding process and variations.
  • Gas metal arc welding , commonly called MIG (metal inert gas), creates an arc between a continuous wire filler metal (consumable electrode) and the sheet metal workpieces. Shielding gas protects both the molten metal and the arc from the atmosphere (Figure 1). This process is suitable for most metals and alloys.
Among the most readily weldable materials are: carbon steels, low-alloy steels, stainless steel; 3000, 5000, and 6000-series aluminum alloys; and magnesium alloys. Other alloys that can also be MIG-welded via special methods include 2000 and 7000-series aluminum alloys; high-zinc-content copper alloys, and high-strength steels.

Welding, Soldering, and Brazing Workers
Significant Points
  • About 2 out of 3 jobs in this occupation are in manufacturing industries. Training ranges from a few weeks to several years of school and on-the-job training. Employment is projected to experience little or no change. Job prospects should be good for skilled welders because employers are reporting difficulty finding enough qualified people.
Nature of the Work About this section
Welding is the most common way of permanently joining metal parts. In this process, heat is applied to metal pieces, melting and fusing them to form a permanent bond. Because of its strength, welding is used in shipbuilding, automobile manufacturing and repair, aerospace applications, and thousands of other manufacturing activities. Welding also is used to join beams in the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures and to join pipes in pipelines, powerplants, and refineries. Welders may work in a wide variety of industries, from car racing to manufacturing. The work done in the different industries and the equipment used may vary greatly. The most common and simplest type of welding today is arc welding, which uses electrical currents to create heat and bond metals together, but there are over 100 different processes that a welder can employ. The type of weld used is normally determined by the types of metals being joined and the conditions under which the welding is to take place. Steel, for instance, can be welded more easily than titanium. Some of these processes involve manually using a rod and heat to join metals, while others are semiautomatic, with a welding machine feeding wire to bond materials. Automated welding, done completely by robots, is increasingly being used in the manufacturing industry.

Welding, Cutting, and Brazing
Introduction
Welding, cutting, and brazing are hazardous activities that pose a unique combination of both safety and health risks to more than 500,000 workers in a wide variety of industries. The risk from fatal injuries alone is more than four deaths per thousand workers over a working lifetime.
Welding, cutting, and brazing is addressed in specific standards for the general industry, shipyard employment, marine terminals, and construction industry.
OSHA Standards
This section highlights OSHA standards, preambles to final rules (background to final rules), Federal Registers (rules, proposed rules, and notices), directives (instructions for compliance officers), and standard interpretations (official letters of interpretation of the standards) related to welding, cutting, and brazing.

welding software and engineering services for industrial resistance welding applications including spot welding, projection welding and resistance brazing and soldering.
http://www.swantec.com
Resistance welding is a highly productive joining technology widely applied in automotive, electrical and electronics, aerospace and other metal processing industry. The process variants of resistance welding include spot welding, projection welding, seam welding, butt welding and micro resistance welding. Due to the fact that many dynamic and interacting parameters are involved in the resistance welding processes, it is a huge task to setup and optimize the production lines applying resistance welding and often difficult to solve welding problems. Many companies rely on resistance welding but want to get rid of the tedious and costly manual weldability tests and speed up weld planning.
More and more industry leaders have turned to simulations and optimizations with to cut costs, reduce time-to-market and improve weld quality. Welding Featured Articles
  • About Welding Welding has been a manufacturing and building process for centuries, from the time that man first tried to solve the problem of how to put two pieces of metal together. The solutions to problem have become known as welding, and since the first attempts, the processes have branched out into newer, broader, and ever-changing formulas. How to Weld with a 6013 Welding Rod The 6013 electrode or welding rod is designed for light to medium penetration all-purpose welding. This electrode is for use on carbon steel and can be used to weld with any polarity. It is a popular electrode for beginners because it has a very stable arc that makes it a good choice for poor fitting joints. Tungsten inert gas (TIG) and metal inert gas (MIG) are two types of arc welding processes. There are a few similarities between the two methods and many differences. How to Weld Floorboards Welding damaged vehicle floorboards because of rust is not easy. However, if you take your time and do it right, it can be a successful do-it-yourself job. You have some wiggle room when welding floorboards because carpet will cover them. The welds don't have to look perfect, but they must be complete and strong to prevent future damage. About TIG Welding Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding is one type of arc welding. TIG welding is different than most arc-welding processes because the electrode is not consumed. TIG welding is considered to be more difficult than other arc-welding processes because of the closer tolerances that are required.
