A Note on LSAT Books and LSAT Preparation
NOTE: We strongly encourage all prospective LSAT test takers to download the Official LSAT Practice Test from the LSAC website to get the most accurate assessment of their LSAT study needs before deciding on any specific test prep strategy. We strongly advise all prospective law school applicants to consult at least two books before taking the LSAT (Law School Admissions Test). First, we recommend one of the official guides published by the LSAC (Law School Admission Council), the test's author. This is the only LSAT preparation book with material from the people who write the actual test. There is a difference between the official questions you will be asked on the exam and the practice questions contained in all other books. Secondly, we recommend one of several

Description: This class will go over the LSAT exam. Prerequisites: Willingness to learn. Required Text: None. Objective: Score high on the LSAT! The LSAT is a standardized test required when applying to most law schools in the U.S. and Canada. All ABA-approved law schools, as well as many non-ABA-approved law schools and most Canadian law schools, require applicants to take the test as part of the admissions process and use the scores as one of the key factors in judging applicants. The test takes about half a day, and you can choose one of four dates annually to take the test at approved centers around the world. The LSAT includes five 35-minute sections, all of which are multiple choice. Four of the five count toward your score, while the fifth is ordinarily used to test new questions or formats and goes unscored. The graded sections include one reading comprehension section, one analytical reasoning section, and two logical reasoning sections. The unscored section can appear at any point in the exam, so you won’t know which it is. At the end of the test, you must complete a 35-minute writing sample. You don’t get a score for the writing sample, but a copy goes to all the schools that receive your test scores. The purpose of the LSAT is to measure the skills you will need for law school. Rather than testing what you already know, it tries to measure how well you’ll respond to the kind of training you’ll receive during your law school studies. Since there’s no standard pre-law curriculum, the test cannot assume common knowledge among law school applicants. The LSAT therefore tries to measure your reasoning, logic, and analytical skills. The skills and abilities the LSAT tests include accurately reading and understanding complicated tasks and applying insight to them; organizing and managing information and making logical inferences from that information; thinking critically and objectively; distinguishing fact from opinion; and analyzing and evaluating other people’s arguments and reasoning. It also tests your ability to work under pressure and how well you adapt to new and unusual circumstances.

    edit The LSAT is Learnable
The first thing to understand about the LSAT is that you can prepare for it by honing the mental skills required by the exam as well as becoming familiar with the format of the test. Many people think that since it is an aptitude test, it is largely a matter of innate ability. Granted, some innate ability is necessary to get a perfect score on the LSAT, but many with sufficient ability will get lower scores because they do not prepare effectively.
edit Attack the Analytical Section First
Note: the analytical section has become significantly easier since the writing of the instructions below. It is no longer nearly as highly timed, i.e., there tend to be fewer problems than there were five years ago. Basically, you should understand that if you attack the analytical section in your preparation, then the logical reasoning section should follow easily. The reading comprehension section will come to you easily as well, so long as you are a fast reader. If you are a slow reader (as I was a few years ago), then you will need to do some deliberate practice in your reading in order to improve. In order to beat the analytical section, you need to see the differences between the types of questions that occur repeatedly. Some of the questions involve ordering, others involve pigeonholing, others both of these at once. Usually, expressing the rule system in a diagram is essential to solving the problem quickly. A pigeonholing problem usually implies a grid diagram, with a spot for each possible assignment of variables. Ordering usually involves a 1 by X grid, with the ordering rules expressed (in shorthand) alongside the grid. In a hybrid game, you will have the X by Y grid along with ordering rules expressed in shorthand.

SAMPLE QUESTIONS FROM AN LSAT
Sample Reading Comprehension Section
Directions: Each passage in this section is followed by a group of questions to be answered on the basis of what is stated or implied in the passage. For some of the questions, more than one of the choices could conceivably answer the question. However, you are to choose the best answer; that is, the response that most accurately and completely answers the question, and blacken the corresponding space on your answer sheet. For the poet Phillis Wheatley, who was brought to colonial New England as a slave in 1761, the formal literary code of eighteenth-century English was thrice removed: by the initial barrier of the unfamiliar English language, by the discrepancy between spoken and literary forms of English, and by the African tradition of oral rather than written verbal art. Wheatley transcended these barriers - she learned the English language and English literary forms so quickly and well that she was composing good poetry in English within a few years of her arrival in New England. Wheatley's experience exemplifies the meeting of oral and written literary cultures. The aesthetic principles of the African oral tradition were preserved in America by folk artist in work songs, dancing, field hollers, religious music, the use of the drum, and, after the drum was forbidden, in the perpetuation of drum effects in song. African languages and the functions of language in African societies not only contributed to the emergence of a distinctive Black English but also exerted demonstrable effects on the manner in which other Americans spoke English. Given her African heritage and her facility with English and the conventions of English poetry, Wheatley's work had the potential to apply the ideas of a written literature to an oral literary tradition in the creation of an African American literary language.

Preparing For the LSAT Pre-Law students often report that LSAT preparation is one of the most stressful experiences in their academic lives. It is important to realize that adequate preparation is keykey to alleviating the stress and key to achieving your target LSAT score. Successful LSAT preparation strategies begin with accurate information about the LSAT itself. Here is how the Law School Admission Council describes the LSAT: "The LSAT is a half-day standardized test required for admission to all . . . LSAC-member schools. It provides a standard measure of acquired reading and verbal reasoning skills that law schools can use as one of several factors in assessing applicants. The test consists of five 35-minute sections of multiple-choice questions. Four of the five sections contribute to the test-taker's score. These sections include one reading comprehension section, one analytical reasoning section, and two logical reasoning sections. The unscored section typically is used to pretest new test items and to preequate new test forms. A 30-minute writing sample is administered at the end of the test."
