From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Diocles (Διοκλῆς in Ancient Greek , ca. 240 BC - ca. 180 BC) was a Greek mathematician and geometer
edit Life and work
Although little is known about the life of Diocles, it is known that he was a contemporary of Apollonius and that he flourished sometime around the end of the third century and the beginning of the second century BC Diocles is thought to be the first person to prove the focal property of the parabola . His name is associated with the geometric curve called the Cissoid of Diocles , which was used by Diocles to solve the problem of doubling the cube . The curve was alluded to by Proclus in his commentary on Euclid and attributed to Diocles by Geminus as early as the beginning of the first century. Fragments of a work by Diocles entitled On burning mirrors were preserved by Eutocius in his commentary of Archimedes On the Sphere and the Cylinder . Historically, On burning mirrors had a large influence on Arabic mathematicians, particularly on al-Haytham , the 11th-century polymath of Cairo whom Europeans knew as "Alhazen". The treatise contains sixteen propositions that are proved by

    Archytas
First published Thu Jun 26, 2003; substantive revision Wed Jul 25, 2007 Archytas of Tarentum was a Greek mathematician, political leader and philosopher, active in the first half of the fourth century BC (i.e., during Plato's lifetime). He was the last prominent figure in the early Pythagorean tradition and the dominant political figure in Tarentum, being elected general seven consecutive times. He sent a ship to rescue Plato from the clutches of the tyrant of Syracuse, Dionysius II, in 361, but his personal and philosophical connections to Plato are complex, and there are many signs of disagreement between the two philosophers. A great number of works were forged in Archytas' name starting in the first century BC, and only four fragments of his genuine work survive, although these are supplemented by a number of important testimonia. Archytas was the first to solve one of the most celebrated mathematical problems in antiquity, the duplication of the cube. We also have his proof showing that ratios of the form ( n n , which are important in music theory, cannot be divided by a mean proportional. He was the most sophisticated of the Pythagorean harmonic theorists and provided mathematical accounts of musical scales used by the practicing musicians of his day. He was the first to identify the group of four canonical sciences (logistic [arithmetic], geometry, astronomy and music), which would become known as the

Pythagoras for Kids - the ancient Greek mathematician Pythagoras and the Pythagorean Theorem
    Pythagoras
Pythagoras lived in the 500's BC , and was one of the first Greek mathematical thinkers. He spent most of his life in the Greek colonies in Sicily and southern Italy. He had a group of followers (like the disciples of Jesus ) who followed him around and taught other people what he had taught them. The Pythagoreans were known for their pure lives (they didn't eat beans , for example, because they thought beans were not pure enough). They wore their hair long, and wore only simple clothing , and went barefoot. Both men and women were Pythagoreans. Pythagoreans were interested in philosophy , but especially in music and mathematics , two ways of making order out of chaos. Music is noise that makes sense, and mathematics is rules for how the world works. Pythagoras himself is best known for proving that the Pythagorean Theorem was true. The Sumerians , two thousand years earlier, already knew that it was generally true, and they used it in their measurements, but Pythagoras is said to have proved that it would always be true. We don't really know whether it was Pythagoras that proved it, because there's no evidence for it until the time of Euclid , but that's the tradition. Some people think that the proof must have been written around the time of Euclid, instead.

    GREEK MATHEMATICIANS
The ancient Greeks were very interested in scientific thought. They were not satisfied with just knowing the facts; they wanted to know the why and how. It should be no surprise that the Greeks were extremely successful in the area of mathematics. The mathematics we use today, and its content, are for the most part Greek. The Greeks laid down the first principles, and invented methods for solving problems. Though most people don't realize it, mathematics is a Greek science - regardless of what modern day analysis might bring. When people look back on Greek genius, they may naturally call to mind masterpieces in Greek literature and art . But the Greeks, with their insatiable desire to know the true meaning of everything and give a rational explanation of it, were irresistibly drawn to the sciences, exact reasoning in general, and logic. There are many famous Greek names in mathematics. One of which is Aristotle , who said he could conceive of nothing more beautiful than the objects of mathematics. Plato , delighted in geometry and the wonders of numbers, inscribed, "let no one destitute of geometry enter my doors" over the entrance to his academy.

    Philosophers-Scientists
    • Epicurus of Samos (341-270 B.C.). Founder of the philosophical school of Epicurianism which, similar to the Atomists, believed that atoms are fundamental parts of the real world. Believed that fate was governed by laws of nature and not some mysterious gods.
    • Straton (Lambsacus, 340-290 B.C.). Greek physicist. Conducted experiments leading him to discover that bodies accelerate when they fall. However, erroneously, he also believes that heavier bodies fall faster. Also studied the lever, but does not find it's law. His work emphasizes the use of experimentation for scientific research. Lived in Alexandria, then moved to Athens to head the Aristitle's Lyceum after Theophrastos.
