Ancient Science and Its Modern Fates
Until recently, historians of the Scientific Revolution of the 16th and 17th centuries treated it as a kind of rebellion against the authority of ancient books and humanist scholarship. In fact, however, it began with the revival of several tremendously important and formidably difficult works of Greek science. Scholarship supported science in this world where faith and science were not yet seen as two, irreconcilable cultures. The three ancient doors to the next rooms all have signs written on them in Greek and Latin. Luckily for you we created modern metal plates with the translations, next to the doors. ARCHIMEDES 287 BC- 211 BC HOME BIOLOGY FILMS GEOGRAPHY ... SPONSORS Archimedes was the eminent mathematician and excellent physicist of his time. He was born in Syracuse, on the island of Sicily in 287 B.C. At that time Sicily was a Greek land. Archimedes was the son of an astronomer. He studied at Alexandria in Egypt, and then returned to Syracuse. He early became an astronomer. He constructed a brass planisphere - a projection of the celestial sphere - that showed the revolution of the Sun, the Moon and the five known planets, and showed the nature of eclipses. His planisphere was taken to Rome and was described by Cicero, 150 years later. Archimedes is generally regarded as the greatest mathematician and scientist of antiquity and one of the three greatest mathematicians of all time. Discoveries and inventions Archimedes became a popular figure as a result of his involvement in the defense of Syracuse against the Roman siege in the First and Second Punic Wars. He is reputed to have held the Romans at bay with war engines of his design; to have been able to move a full-size

Meet the Math Greeks
That's Archimedes (upper left), Euclid (lower left), and Pythagoras So far this week, we've met the three biggest names in ancient Greek philosophy Socrates Plato , and Aristotle . Now let's pluck the strings and pull the levers of three great Greek mathematicians: Pythagoras, Euclid, and Archimedes. If, hopping out of your time machine, you told any of these three that he's remembered as a remarkable mathematician, he'd actually be surprisedand not just at the sight of your hip time-traveling togs. In ancient Greece, math wasn't a specialty. It was part of a philosophical education, valued as a means of discerning the nature of reality. Pythagoras and the Triangle of Truth Pythagoras used math mainly to make a point about religion. Not much is known about his life, except that he was born around 580 BC on the island of Samos. After early philosophical study, sources say he traveled in Egypt and Babylonia, learning what he could of their science and practical mathematics. Later, he founded a religious school in the city of Croton in southern Italy. There he began preaching that numbers are the building blocks of existence.

Biographical Information Occupation, Sphere of Activity Apollonius of Perga ( c262-c190 BC ) - whose life story remains a mystery as it is not even certain he was born in Perga, and his life dates are rough estimates - is remembered for his only major work still extant, Conics , an 8-book work (of which the first 7 survive) which summarises the knowledge of the time on the subject, and goes on to introduce numerous major new ideas. The terms "ellipse", "parabola" and "hyperbola" to describe conical sections, were coined in this work, and new definitions of the shapes were found. Until then, they had been defined as sections, perpendicular to the base, of different types of cone. Apollonius redefined them all as sections, at different angles, of the same cone. He credited Conon of Samos ( c280-c220 BC ), a collaborator of Archimedes of Syracuse ( c287-212 BC ), and Euclid of Alexandria ( c325-c265 BC ) with the original work on conical sections that inspired this work. Of his other books, all, with the exception of

Heron the Mathematician Heron, (also known as Hero) was a Greek mathematician. Hero’s major contributions to mathematics were his formula of square root, also his primary contribution to geometry was his writings and his findings. Hero also wrote many books. In this report I will be giving you information about Hero, such as: what he did during his life, (the little bit that scholars know), what some of his successes were, what books he wrote, and the importance of some of his books. Hero was born in Egypt. Some authorities place his birthday early 150 B.C.E. in Ptolemaic, Egypt. While other scholars have dated his birth to be 250 C.E. in late Roman Empire. Nothing is really known about Hero’s life in Egypt, actually nothing is really known of Hero’s life at all. In the following paragraphs will be what we do know about Hero’s life, but we only know this because of some clues that he made in the 14 known books that he has written that have been found. As a college student Hero spent most of his time in the Library at the University of Alexandria. He loved to be in the library, because of the series of gardens, the 40,000 volumes, and the 300,000 books. Hero was well strongly influenced by the writings of Ctesibius of Alexandria. He may have been a student of Ctesibius. When he became older he taught at the University of Alexandria. Hero taught mathematics, mechanics, and physical science. He wrote many books and he used them as text for his students, and manuals for technicians. Here are some of the books that he wrote:
