( Discuss A paradox is a true statement or group of statements that leads to a contradiction or a situation which defies intuition . The term is also used for an apparent contradiction that actually expresses a non-dual truth ( cf. kōan Catuskoti ). Typically, the statements in question do not really imply the contradiction, the puzzling result is not really a contradiction, or the premises themselves are not all really true or cannot all be true together. The word paradox is often used interchangeably with contradiction . It is also used to describe situations that are ironic But many paradoxes, such as Curry's paradox , do not yet have universally accepted resolutions. Sometimes the term paradox is used for situations that are merely surprising. The birthday paradox , for instance, is unexpected but perfectly logical. The logician Willard V. O. Quine

Russell's Paradox
First published Fri Dec 8, 1995; substantive revision Wed May 27, 2009 Russell's paradox is the most famous of the logical or set-theoretical paradoxes. The paradox arises within naive set theory by considering the set of all sets that are not members of themselves. Such a set appears to be a member of itself if and only if it is not a member of itself, hence the paradox. R R is a member of itself, then by definition it must not be a member of itself. Similarly, if R is not a member of itself, then by definition it must be a member of itself. Discovered by Bertrand Russell in 1901, the paradox has prompted much work in logic, set theory and the philosophy and foundations of mathematics.
History of the paradox
Russell appears to have discovered his paradox in the late spring of 1901, while working on his Principles of Mathematics (1903). Cesare Burali-Forti, an assistant to Giuseppe Peano, had discovered a similar antinomy in 1897 when he noticed that since the set of ordinals is well-ordered, it too must have an ordinal. However, this ordinal must be both an element of the set of all ordinals and yet greater than every such element. Unlike Burali-Forti's paradox, Russell's paradox does not involve either ordinals or cardinals, relying instead only on the primitive notion of set.

Akin to Oxymoron an interesting philosophical, deep interpretation/definition: I think of a paradox as the middle ground between two seemingly contradictory points. I usually think of examples in teaching like wanting a safe school but also wanting kids to have freedom, wanting them to have choice and interest in what they learn but wanting them to "get" certain "stuff", wanting a friendly relationship with colleagues but being able to say the tough stuff to each other, etc. I think of paradox as an interesting struggle or conflict or a midpoint between two opposing forces. I doubt this helps, but...I figured I'd put it out there. I've spent some time trying to embrace the concept and what it represents to me rather than feeling like I'm trying to solve a rubix cube. I'm trying to learn to live in the fact that most of life is a paradox! And another: I have always taught it that it is something that seems contradictory on the surface, but on closer inspection actually holds a truth. In Macbeth...."Fair is foul and foul is fair"; "lesser than he but greater"; "not so happy, yet happier" In 1984..."War is Peace"; "Freedom is Slavery"; "Ignorance is strength"

  • My Favorites
A definition of paradox appropriate for this essay is that given by the Random House Unabridged Dictionary; 'any person, thing, or situation exhibiting an apparently contradictory nature'. A concept can appear to be a paradox due to our lack of understanding or the inadequacies of language. While such paradoxes may be resolved in time with better understanding, it is unlikely that the paradoxes mentioned here will be so easily resolved.
    • The Voting Paradox
I should make it clear that what I am referring to here is the apparent paradox for the individual voting in a general election. The term, "Voter's Paradox" as often used in the scholarly Social Choice publications refers to a situation in which the personal preference ordering of three or more alternatives can result in a group ordering that is not transitive. I will describe this paradox further below . But my subject here is the "insignificant vote" situation in general elections. This paradox is quite representative of the general problem of the Social Dilemmas which I discuss here and has to do with the fact that an individual's vote has no significant impact on the outcome of an election. The

13. Paradox Or Fallacy
A discussion on paradox, with the goal being to determine what is paradox and what is fallacy.
http://www.paradoxes.info/
Preface
As part of a Philosophy paper (Phil 310 - Logic) I sat at the University of Canterbury (Christchurch, New Zealand), I had the pleasure of being intorduced to the paradox. The textbook for the course was Paradoxes (Sainsbury, Mark - 1997, 2nd Ed, Cambridge University Press). Upon reading the book, I decided that at least half of the so-called "paradoxes" were not paradoxes at all - they were merely poorly reasoned arguments. Armed with this belief, I searched the web for any discussion of paradoxes. The results where somewhat disappointing. There are plenty of pages dedicated to paradoxes but unfortunately, they rarely go past the explanation of the paradox. It is for this reason that I have taken it upon myself to create a discussion on paradox, with the goal being to detirmine what is paradox and what is fallacy.
Introduction
A paradox can be defined as a contradiction derived from seemingly valid reasoning and true premises. All reasoning is built upon the assumption that all contradictions are unacceptable. Therefore, to hold a paradox as being acceptable is irrational. A fallacy is an misleading argument or one that contains faulty reasoning. If an argument can be reduced to a contradiction then it suggests that either one of the premises is at fault or that the reasoning is suspect. I suspect all of the "paradoxes" on this site to fall into this category.
