How to contact me Several people have asked me about unsolved problems. I will take the easy way out: see the list of 50 problems in Bondy and Murty . You can now see the list as it originally appeard in the the text, Graph Theory with Applications
December 2007 : I have now received a copy of the new text, GTM 244. and the authors revisit these unsolved problems in Appendix A, and have increased the number of unsolved problems to 100.
Some of these problems have been solved (and thus the title is slightly incorrect) and I won't claim to be familiar with all current results. If you find that one of them has been solved (or even that some reasonable progress has been made), please e-mail me. ( How to contact me .) If I receive comments on these new problems, I will of course post those that seem suitable (and, at that point, I would presumably post the problem to which the comment refers). Note, however, the publisher does have a site for the text, http://blogs.springer.com/bondyandmurty/ , and it would seem reasonable that one should post comments there. Also, I'm not giving you all of the references in

Three for the Money: The Degree/Diameter Problem
Description
Students can understand and work on an unsolved problem in mathematics. There is a good chance that this problem can be solved by someone who spends enough time experimenting with it. The only skills required to work on it are the ability to draw dots and connect them with lines, and the understanding of four ideas related to graphs: degree diameter planarity , and size . (These concepts can be explored in the story Superperson Saves the Monster Materials Instructions Ideas for discussion
Materials
  • One large copy of the puzzle graph that all students can see, such as one that is drawn on the floor with masking tape, or a copy for each student or group of students.
  • Paper and pencil should be handy so students can experiment and draw their own solutions to the problem.
Instructions
  • Explain to students that you are going to tell them about a problem in mathematics that is easy to understand that no one has solved yet. There is no reason why one of them could not be the person to solve it. A famous mathematician, Paul Erdos, has offered a large cash prize for the person who succeeds in drawing the graph that solves this problem. They could win it.

Urgent problems in current programming languages that call for much rethinking
    1. Programs should no longer be "written"
It's time to finally overcome the antediluvian technology of software production using text editors. Programs should no longer be "written" but constructed/composed in Lego-like fashion from basic constructs, using structure editors rather than text editors. Particularly the executable portions of programs are the last bastions of textual programming that remain to be captured by "point-and-click" technology Structure editors are also a valuable and almost indispensable basis for the realization of powerful restructuring / refactoring operations, which should be supported by every modern IDE (Integrated Development Environment). Lava solution
    2. "Interfaces" and "implementations" should be strictly separated
Older, non-object-oriented languages like Modula-2 and Ada , that were based on "abstract data types", had already achieved a clean syntactic and semantic

    Unsolved Problems
Does there exist a number that is perfect and odd?
A given number is perfect if it is equal to the sum of all its proper divisors. This question was first posed by Euclid in ancient Greece. This question is still open. Euler proved that if N is an odd perfect number, then in the prime power decomposition of N , exactly one exponent is congruent to 1 mod 4 and all the other exponents are even. Furthermore, the prime occurring to an odd power must itself be congruent to 1 mod 4. A sketch of the proof appears in Exercise 87, page 203 of Underwood Dudley's Elementary Number Theory. It has been shown that there are no odd perfect numbers

Unsolved Problems and Unmet Needs in Magnetic Resonance Call for Abstracts: Submission Deadline: 9 December 2005
The submission deadline and procedure for these "unsolved problems" abstracts is separate from those of the regular ISMRM abstracts. Please note that abstracts submitted for this course may not also be submitted for presentation in the regular scientific sessions.
We are pleased to announce a new initiative to be launched at the 2006 ISMRM meeting in Seattle, to highlight unsolved problems and unmet needs in magnetic resonance. Online submissions on important problems and needs will be solicited, and approximately ten of these submissions will be selected for presentation over the course of four mornings. The submission deadline and procedure for these “unsolved problems” abstracts will be separate from those of regular ISMRM abstracts Background: The field of magnetic resonance is increasingly rich and diverse, spanning far too many areas of clinical and research activity for any one person or group to track effectively. At the annual ISMRM meeting and in many of our professional interactions, we tend to focus on what we or others have recently accomplished in our areas of interest, or else we speculate together on current trends and promising future directions in MR research and practice. In the midst of all this lively and topical activity, the less satisfying questions of what we

This is a collection of open problems in Discrete Mathematics which are currently being researched by members of the DIMACS community. These problems are easily stated, require little mathematical background, and may readily be understood and worked on by anyone who is eager to think about interesting and unsolved mathematical problems. Some of these problems are quite hard and have been open for a long time. Others are newer. For further information on a particular problem, you may write to the associated researcher. Although these problems are intended for undergraduates, it is expected that high school students, teachers, graduate students and professional mathematicians will be drawn to this collection. This is not discouraged. Each of these problems is associated with some member of DIMACS. If you have any questions, comments, insights or solutions, please send email to the researcher who is listed with the problem.
