Huberman, Bronislaw
Bronislaw Huberman (born Czestochowa, Dec 19, 1882; died Corsier-sur-Vevey, June 15, 1947), Polish violinist, widely regarded as one of the most original concert artists of the 20th century. As a boy, Hubermann played the Brahms Violin Concerto in front of the composer, who is said to have been greatly moved by the performance. He played regularly in Vienna, and between 1934 and 1936 taught in the violin master school at the Vienna Conservatory. He later helped Jewish musicians to get to Palestine, and organized the Palestine Symphony Orchestra. Hubermann and Schenker Huberman was greatly admired by, among others, Furtwängler. Schenker evidently thought well of his playing and musicianship, while harboring some reservations, as in this diary comment: "Hubermann has visibly grown, has at his command all the possibilities of tone connection and gradations of light and shade, all arts of bowing, but at the same time yields to the commonest of desires, which he allows to deteriorate even into tastelessness." (OJ 3/6, July 26, 1924). Sources: (2008); Federhofer

(1882-1947), violinist and founder of the *Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.
Born in Czestochowa, Poland, Huberman was a child prodigy in Warsaw. At the age of ten, he played before the emperor Francis Joseph in Vienna and for the violinist Joseph *Joachim in Berlin. In 1893 he began playing in the main cities of Europe. An appearance with the famous soprano Adelina Patti led to many other engagements, and in 1896 he played the Brahms violin concerto in the presence of the composer. From then on Huberman was a celebrity. He played on Paganini's violin in Geneva in 1908 and was a frequent soloist in the concert halls of Germany.
When the Nazis introduced their measures against Jews in 1933, the (col. 1055) German conductor Furtwaengler nevertheless invited Huberman to appear with him. Huberman refused and later gave his reasons in the English newspaper
