I recently completed a Studio pied a terre in the Georgian period for Mr. David Brown at Lincoln Center. That is, we were almost finished with only the artwork to be designed and purchased. I have a passion for antique architectural prints and I can't believe that I didn't know about Argosy Books. After all Designers don't really like to share their finds with others. I was in a cab, looking out the window as we passed by Argosy Books and noticed a fine selection of framed prints hanging in the window. I had found my oasis! I now head first to Argosy for all my print work and framing. What a treasure and a real lifesaver for design business! Thanks eternal. - Aaron James powered by Bibliopolis

Jewish Music in Poland Between the World Wars
I am pleased to announce a new web page, finished in time just before the New Year 5764. It is a virtual page of commemoration of Jewish Musicians in Poland between the Two World Wars and in the Holocaust. It is based on the book of Issachar Fater: "Jewish Music in Poland between the World Wars" Hakibbutz Hameuchad Publishing House Ltd., Tel Aviv 1992 ISBN 965-02-0060-6 www.zchor.org/fater/musicians.htm

I am very thankful to Mr. Fater for giving me the honor to translate, extract and post parts of this book in the Internet. Nowadays all the world knows about one musician, which appears in the lexicon of that book many years before he became a legend in a film, and this is of course Wladislaw Szpilman, "the Pianist", in the well known film of Roman Polanski. But very few know about his father, the musician Szmuel Szpilman, perished in ghetto Warsaw, or his uncle, Reuwen Szpilman, a pious Jew, gifted with many musical talents, born in Ostrowice, father of 8 musician children and musical grandchildren, murdered in Treblinka... These were part of a whole world of Jewish musicians, who graced this earth with their music, classical and traditional, jazz and folklore, singing and playing endless instruments, conductors, masters, violinists, pianists, composers... Unfortunately most of them were not as fortunate as Wladislaw Szpilman who survived the Holocaust, and their music as their lives were cut off in the middle of creation and the middle of life, by the Nazis and their collaborators.

The loss of his right thumb, cut off in a shaving accident forty-two years ago, proved only a temporary handicap to the violinist. To Mr. Huberman, American audiences were the best listeners that an artist could find anywhere except in the Netherlands. He created his reputation in Europe and gained fame by playing all over the world, but he preferred coming to this country, where, he said, he received his finest inspirations. Mr. Huberman resigned from the teaching staff of the Vienna State Academy in August, 1936, to devote himself more fully to the new orchestra in Palestine. News of his leaving the master class at the academy was received with dismay by the musical public of Vienna, where the violinist had been an idol for years. The violinist, narrowly missed death on Oct. 6, 1937, in a plane crash near Palembang, Sumatra. Four others in the plane were killed, but Mr. Huberman escaped with a fracture of the left wrist and one of the right hand. The muscles were not damaged, however, and a year later he was able to resume his concert career.

Violinists' Discographies on the Web
The
following web sites all have pages listing details of the recordings of the artist to which the link refers. Many researchers will find these lists invaluable. Alas, no two discographies are alike. Many discographers compile lists of only the recordings and the catalogue numbers. But some also list recording dates and a very few include matrix numbers. The occasional list will supply recording details including location information. Very few follow the conventions for writing discographies, but never the less provide the required information. We may never achieve uniformity on these pages, but so long as they are available, the information will be available for future use. Violin Land would like to thank every hard-working and diligent discographer, for, without them it would be a sadder world. A B C D ... Z A
