Classical Editor: Rob Barnett Founder Len Mullenger PAGANINI, Niccolo b Genoa, 17 October 1782 d Nice, 27 May 1840, aged fifty-seven The son of a dockyard worker, he was a violin virtuoso by the time he was eleven, and received tuition from famous teachers. In his mid-teens a number of concerts in Italy ensured that he was no longer poverty-stricken, but success made him gamble and drink so heavily that it nearly killed him. Nursed back to health by a noblewoman who befriended him, he resumed giving concerts at the age of twenty-three, but in 1824 his indulgences caused another breakdown. After his recovery in 1827 he made triumphant tours of Austria, Germany, France, and Westphalia where he was made a baron. He also visited Britain. In the late 1830s his health and his luck began to fail, and he died of a disease of the larynx. His legendary pact with the Devil ensured that he could not be buried in consecrated ground, and his body continued to be moved around until 1926.

A popular idol, he inspired the Romantic mystique of the virtuoso and revolutionized violin technique. After initial study with his father, Paganini studied with a local violinist, G. Servetto, and then with the celebrated Giacomo Costa. He made his first appearance in 1793 and then studied with Alessandro Rolla and Gaspare Ghiretti at Parma. In 1797, accompanied by his father, he toured Lombardy, where with each concert his reputation grew. Gaining his independence soon after, he indulged excessively in gambling and romantic love affairs. At one point he pawned his violin because of gambling debts; a French merchant lent him a Guarneri violin to play a concert and, after hearing him, gave him the instrument. Between 1801 and 1807 he wrote the Capricci In 1828 Paganini experienced great success in Vienna, and his appearances in Paris and London in 1831 were equally sensational. His tour of England and Scotland in 1832 made him a wealthy man. In 1833 he settled in Paris, where he commissioned Hector Berlioz to write his symphony Harold en Italie . Paganini thought that the challenge of its viola solo was too slight, however, and he never played it. Following the failure of the Casino Paganini, a gambling house in which he had invested, he went to Marseille in 1839, then to Nice.

He extended the compass of the violin by his use of harmonics, perfected the use of double and triple stops, and revived the practice of scordatura, the diverse tunings of the strings. Paganini made his debut as a child prodigy in 1793 at Genoa, his birthplace. In 1801 he retired to a villa in Tuscany and did not resume his concerts until 1805, when he became court violinist to the princess of Lucca. After he left (1813) her court, his success in Milan carried his fame throughout Europe. His retirement in 1835 was followed by the loss of his voice and, later, by death from cancer of the larynx. Paganini composed numerous pieces, most of them bravura variations for violin. Among the few compositions published during his lifetime are the 24 caprices for violin that were adapted for piano by both Schumann and Liszt. See biographies by J. Pulver (1936, repr. 1970) and S.
