Biography
Russian-American violist known for his fine artistry. He made his symphonic debut as an 11 year-old virtuoso followed by a concert series tour. In 1937 he debuted in New York; six years later he played Carnegie Hall. A gregarious dynamo of nervous energy, he has three children with his second wife. 1960 - He also played a major role in saving New York City's Carnegie Hall from demolition. 1987 - Stern received the Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement. 1994 - Their marriage ended in divorce in after 43 years of marriage. 1997 - On the 23rd of January, Isaac married his third wife, Linda Reynolds, who survived him. 2001 - Died on the 22nd of September of congestive heart failure. He was 81.

    Stern, Isaac
    Stern, Isaac, , American violinist, b. Kremenets, in what is now Ukraine. Brought to the United States as an infant, Stern began piano lessons at the age of six and violin lessons at eight. He studied at the San Francisco Conservatory and made his debut at 11 with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. After his New York debut in 1937 at Town Hall, Stern made extensive and brilliantly successful world tours. He was particularly noted for his warm, rich tone in a repertoire that ranged from the Baroque to the Romantic and the modern. He recorded widely and was an active and enthusiastic teacher, known for his spirited encouragement of young musicians. In 1960 he led a successful campaign to save Carnegie Hall, the great New York City performance space, which was threatened with demolition. He subsequently served as president of the hall, a position he held until his death. Stern is considered one of the 20th cent.'s leading virtuosos. See his autobiography

(b. July 21, 1920, Kremenets, Russia), Russian-born American violinist, recognized as one of the world's greatest violinists. Stern was taken by his parents to San Francisco as a one-year-old infant. He studied at the San Francisco Conservatory (1928-31) and with the Russian violinist Naoum Blinder (1932-39); he made his debut at the age of 11. After a highly successful New York concert in 1939 he rapidly gained recognition. He began to tour regularly after his European debut in 1948, appearing all over the world and at all the major festivals. He premiered works by Paul Hindemith, George Rochberg, and Krzysztof Penderecki. In addition to his concert performances, Stern appeared on radio and television and made numerous recordings. A documentary film, From Mao to Mozart, was made of his 1979 tour of China. Active in organizations promoting the arts, he helped save Carnegie Hall from demolition, afterward becoming president of the Carnegie Hall Corporation, and helped to establish the National Endowment for the Arts in 1964.
