Crops and livestock that were once relatively small in terms of production have grown dramatically in recent years. For example, poultry and swine, respectively, are our second and third largest agricultural industries and Oklahoma is now one of the top states in their production. F rom the arid High Plains of the panhandle to the forests of southeastern Oklahoma, there aren't many North American crops not grown in our state. Fields of wheat and corn are next-door neighbors to vineyards and organically grown specialty crops. And while many people continue to view Oklahoma as one of the Plains States, we have over 6 million acres of commercial timber production, which contributes over $1.5 billion to our economy each year.

Food and fiber productivity soared due to new technologies, mechanization, increased chemical use, specialization and government policies that favored maximizing production. These changes allowed fewer farmers with reduced labor demands to produce the majority of the food and fiber in the U.S. Although these changes have had many positive effects and reduced many risks in farming, there have also been significant costs.Prominent among these are topsoil depletion, groundwater contamination, the decline of family farms, continued neglect of the living and working conditions for farm laborers, increasing costs of production, and the disintegration of economic and social conditions in rural communities. A growing movement has emerged during the past two decades to question the role of the agricultural establishment in promoting practices that contribute to these social problems. Today this movement for sustainable agriculture is garnering increasing support and acceptance within mainstream agriculture. Not only does sustainable agriculture address many environmental and social concerns, but it offers innovative and economically viable opportunities for growers, laborers, consumers, policymakers and many others in the entire food system.

The workshops conducted during your program will depend on the needs of the community at that time. Volunteers are part of a team including GSC staff delivering a package of food security innovations for rural village trainings. Whether you are an experienced camper or a novice, worry not! GSC provides all needed equipment including sleeping bags, mats, and tents. You will stay in a secure area, usually in the compound of the village leader, and a local mama will prepare meals for the group. Volunteers find staying in the village culturally rewarding as they have time to visit with community members and truly experience rural Tanzanian life.

In this collection, there are almost 200 documents published before 1942 (before synthetic chemicals became widely used) that contain state-of-the-art information and data that is still very pertinent for today's agriculture. Access to this data is intended to provide growers with new ideas on crop production without chemicals, as well as help researchers conserve scarce resources by avoiding unintended duplication. This collection is provided by the Alternative Farming Systems Information Center (AFSIC) , a part of the National Agricultural Library (NAL) , with funding from the USDA National Organic Program and Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program.
