October 31, 2010 Member of Young Adult Library Services Association You may not automatically connect vocabulary to math studies, but a strong math vocabulary can help kids and teachers communicate about math topics. For example, when teachers explain long division, children will understand the concepts better if they understand the meaning of divisor, dividend and quotient. You can teach your child math vocabulary words or show your child how to look words in the dictionary. Although general dictionaries, like

Very good mathematics dictionary, also available on CD-ROM. The price is very reasonable, and the dictionary is fairly comprehensive. Most definitions are rather dry and technical, albeit precise. Some figures and cross-references are provided, but no literature references and few formulas. The typesetting of the formulas is not very attractive. The HarperCollins Dictionary is a useful quick reference to mathematics students and educators, but is likely less useful to students or researchers in the physical sciences who need examples, diagrams, and references. There is little material on recreational mathematics or on very recent results. The encyclopedia by Weisstein is more eclectic, slightly less technical, and contains more details and much more recreational material. $18. Bouvier, Alain. and George, Michel.

Authors: Holger Rauhut Karin Schnass Pierre Vandergheynst (Submitted on 4 Jan 2007) Abstract: This article extends the concept of compressed sensing to signals that are not sparse in an orthonormal basis but rather in a redundant dictionary. It is shown that a matrix, which is a composition of a random matrix of certain type and a deterministic dictionary, has small restricted isometry constants. Thus, signals that are sparse with respect to the dictionary can be recovered via Basis Pursuit from a small number of random measurements. Further, thresholding is investigated as recovery algorithm for compressed sensing and conditions are provided that guarantee reconstruction with high probability. The different schemes are compared by numerical experiments. Comments: 19 pages, 3 figures
