Here are the original instructions: "In this puzzle, your job is to place a number into every empty box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9-box square within the large square (there are 9 of these) will contain each number from 1 through 9. Remember that no number may appear more than once in any row across, any column down, or within any small 9-box square; this will help you solve the puzzle. The numbers in circles below the diagram will give you a head starteach of these four numbers goes into one of the circle boxes in the diagram (not necessarily in the order given)." Figure 1. The first Number Place puzzles. ( #16, page 6, 1979-05) Who made this puzzle? In addition to being the crossword editor of the New York Times , Will Shortz is a puzzle historian, so he did detective work to find the answer. He knew that "Number Place" puzzles had appeared in Dell Magazines, and went through his collection to find the first. Dell listed no author, but the name Howard Garns always appeared in the contributor's list of any issue containing a "Number Place" puzzle. Also, Garns' name did not appear in any issue lacking a Number Place, which clinched the identification. Further research revealed that Howard Garns to be a retired architect who created the puzzle at age 74. Howard Garns died in Indianapolis in 1989, and never got a chance to see his creation as a worldwide phenomenon. (Shortz, pers. comm. 2005)

Several of these pages have moved or died in the last few months, and there's lots of new stuff I need to add, but I've been busy with my real job . Thanks for your patience. Mathematicians use the words "game theory" in two different senses. The more common sense of the word includes things like the Prisoner's Dilemma, poker, the New York Stock Exchange, or other "imperfect-information" games. Research in this type of game theory makes a lots of money for a lot of people, and has even resulted in a few Nobel prizes. An introductory sketch is available at Drexel University. Those aren't the kind of mathematical games I like. Combinatorial game theory tries to analyze the outcomes of "perfect-information" games like Nim and Tic-tac-toe. More difficult real-world examples are Hex, Reversi, Mancala, Checkers, Chess, Shogi, and Go. Nancy Casey has a

Have Mom or Dad help you fold a piece of construction paper (matching color you have on) into a cone shape and secure with tape. Poke 1 hole on either side of big end, and affix string through holes and tie around your chin. Write "Crayola" in black on the hat and you are a crayon!

     Extractions: Logical Journey of the Zoombinis is a captivating educational program designed around an escape story. The Zoombinis were a happy group of creatures (somewhat similar in appearance to the old Mr. Potato Head), whose island is taken over by the Bloats. The user's job is to help them in their escape. Each Zoombini is characterized by four features: hair, eyes, nose and feet. Each of these features exists in five variations. The user begins by creating an escape party of 16 different looking Zoombini. Once the team is assembled they set out on a path that would make Indiana Jones proud. Just like the problems encountered by the archeology professor of cinema fame, the Zoombini's confront a dozen obstacles which must be overcome using deductive logic and creative reasoning. For example, the first obstacle in their path is a pair of rope bridges. These bridges are highly unusual, in that they are each allergic to different Zoombini features. One might be allergic to red noses and glasses, the other to blue noses and curly hair. Through trial and error, then logic, the user must help the Zoombini across the bridges.

He noted was perfect each distance from 1 to 6 appeared exactly once and wondered if more perfect rulers were possible. Unfortunately, he proved that this was the largest perfect ruler. Golomb rulers were named as a result of his investigations. Consider the following curious triangle (Figure 1). Note that CH=1, BF=2, AD=3, BE=4, ..., BD=16, AH=17, AC=18, AB=19. There are a total of 18 different possible distances along the edges, with none repeated. All distances from 1 to 19 can be measured, except 14. All Golomb rulers up to 8 marks were originally discovered by Wallace C. Babcock. The rest have been discovered through both combinatorial analysis and impressive computer power. The following table contains examples of all known rulers up to 24 marks. The years given are the verification dates, and not necessarily the year a particular ruler was originally discovered.
