He became a professor at Harvard University in Applied Physics. Bloembergen enrolled in 1938 at the University of Utrecht to study physics. Bloembergen left the war ravaged Netherlands in 1945 to pursue graduate studies at Harvard University. Six weeks before his arrival, Harvard Professor Edward M. Purcell (along with his graduate students Torrey and Pound) discovered nuclear magnetic resonance . Bloembergen was hired to develop a first NMR machine. While at Harvard he enjoyed classes from J. Bloembergen made a pioneering use of lasers in these investigations. Bloembergen received undergraduate (1941) and graduate (1943) degrees from the University of Utrecht. In 1946 he entered Harvard University, where with Edward Purcell and Robert Pound he did fundamental research on nuclear magnetic resonance. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Leiden in 1948, he returned to Harvard, where he became a professor of applied physics in 1951 and Gerhard Gade university professor in 1980. He became a U.S. citizen in 1958. Bloembergen's early research on nuclear magnetic resonance led him to an interest in masers. He designed a three-stage crystal maser that was dramatically more powerful than earlier gaseous masers and that has become the most widely used microwave amplifier. Bloembergen then developed laser spectroscopy, which allows high-precision observations of atomic structure. His laser spectroscopic investigations led him in turn to formulate nonlinear optics, a new theoretical approach to the analysis of how electromagnetic radiation interacts with matter. Bloembergen's research in nonlinear optics helped procure him a share of the Nobel Prize.

I am the second child, born on March 11, 1920, in Dordrecht, the Netherlands. My father, a chemical engineer, was an executive in a chemical fertilizer company. My mother, who had an advanced degree to teach French, devoted all her energies to rearing a large family. Before I entered grade school, the family moved to Bilthoven, a residential suburb of Utrecht. We were brought up in the protestant work ethic, characteristic of the Dutch provinces. Intellectual pursuits were definitely encouraged. The way of life, however, was much more frugal than the family income would have dictated. At the age of twelve I entered the municipal gymnasium in Utrecht, founded as a Latin school in 1474. Nearly all teachers held Ph.D. degrees. The rigid curriculum emphasized the humanities: Latin, Greek, French, German, English, Dutch, history and mathematics. My preference for science became evident only in the last years of secondary school, where the basics of physics and chemistry were well taught. The choice of physics was probably based on the fact that I found it the most difficult and challenging subject, and I still do to this day. My maternal grandfather was a high school principal with a Ph.D. in mathematical physics. So there may be some hereditary factor as well. I am ever more intrigued by the correspondence between mathematics and physical facts. The adaptability of mathematics to the description of physical phenomena is uncanny.

Bloembergen received bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Utrecht. In 1946 he accepted a research appointment at Harvard University, where he undertook the studies for his doctorate. His Ph.D. was granted by the University of Leiden in 1948. Returning to Harvard, he became an associate professor in 1951 and Gerhard Gade university professor in 1980. He became a U.S. citizen in 1958. Bloembergen became involved with the fundamental principles of masers and lasers during his doctoral research at Harvard in the late 1940s. Within two years after Charles Townes had demonstrated the maser in 1953, Bloembergen provided the specifications for an improved version that has become the most widely used microwave amplifier.
