Extractions: Brown, Herbert Charles (1912-) was a British-born American organic chemist who made important contributions to the study of boron compounds. For his work in creating compounds that produce chemical bonds, Brown shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in chemistry with Georg Wittig . Brown's research yielded inexpensive methods to create rare compounds. He also developed a number of reducing agents that can be used in a variety of applications. While at Purdue, Brown discovered a process to produce organoboranes, compounds that have proven valuable as intermediates in the creation of carbon-carbon bonds. In addition, he investigated the steric effect, the effect of the arrangement of atoms within a molecule. Herbert Charles Brovarnik was born in London. When Brown was 2 years old, his parents emigrated from London to Chicago and changed their name to Brown. When his father died of an infection in 1926, Brown left school to help his mother run the family hardware store. A few years later he returned to school and graduated in 1930. After receiving a partial scholarship, he attended the University of Chicago, earning a B.S. degree in 1936 and a Ph.D. degree in 1938. He achieved the rank of instructor at Chicago before leaving to join the faculty at Wayne (now Wayne State) University in Detroit. In 1947, he accepted a position as professor of chemistry at Purdue University, where he was appointed R. B. Wetherill Distinguished Professor before becoming emeritus professor in 1978.

Butenandt's name will always be associated with his work on sex hormones, for which he was awarded, jointly with Leopold Ruzicka, the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for 1939. In 1929 he isolated oestrone in pure, crystalline form, almost at the same time that E.A. Doisy did this in America. In 1931 he isolated androsterone in pure, crystalline form. From androsterone he as well as Ruzicka, independently of each other, obtained testosterone in 1939, a compound which had been obtained from the testes in 1935 by Ernst Laqueur. Progesterone was isolated by Butenandt from the corpus luteum in 1934.

Jan. 18, 1995, Munich), German biochemist who, with Leopold Ruzicka , was awarded the 1939 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work on sex hormones. Although forced by the German government to refuse the prize, he was able to accept the honour in 1949. In 1929, almost simultaneously with E.A. Doisy in the United States, Butenandt isolated estrone , one of the hormones responsible for sexual development and function in females. In 1931 he isolated and identified androsterone , a male sex hormone, and in 1934, the hormone progesterone , which plays an important part in the female reproductive cycle. He carried out much research on the interrelationships of the sex hormones and on their possible carcinogenic properties. The large-scale production of cortisone stemmed largely from Butenandt's work on hormones. n sk), becoming director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute (later the Max Planck Institute) in 1936. He was elected president of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science, serving from 1960 to 1972.
