Extractions: De Broglie, Prince Louis-Victor Prince Louis-Victor de Broglie of the French Academy, Permanent Secretary of the Academy of Sciences, and Professor at the Faculty of Sciences at Paris University, was born at Dieppe (Seine Infrieure) on 15th August, 1892, the son of Victor, Duc de Broglie and Pauline d'Armaill. After studying at the Lyce Janson of Sailly, he passed his school-leaving certificate in 1909. He applied himself first to literary studies and took his degree in history in 1910. Then, as his liking for science prevailed, he studied for a science degree, which he gained in 1913. He was then conscripted for military service andposted to the wireless section of the army, where he remained for the whole of the war of 1914-1918. During this period he was stationed at the Eiffel Tower, where he devoted his spare time to the study of technical problems. At the end of the war Louis de Broglie resumed his studies of general physics. While taking an interest in the experimental work carried out by his elder brother, Maurice, and co-workers, he specialized in theoretical physics and, in particular, in the study of problems involving quanta. In 1924 at the Faculty of Sciences at Paris University he delivered a thesis Recherches sur la Thorie des Quanta (Researches on the quantum theory), which gained him his doctor's degree.

Extractions: Broglie's interest in what he called the "mysteries" of atomic physicsnamely, unsolved conceptual problems of the sciencewas aroused when he learned from his brother about the work of the German physicists Max Planck and Albert Einstein, but the decision to take up the profession of physicist was long in coming. He began at 18 to study theoretical physics at the Sorbonne, but he was also earning his degree in history (1909), thus moving along the family path toward a career in the diplomatic service. After a period of severe conflict, he declined the research project in French history that he had been assigned and chose for his doctoral thesis a subject in physics.

Louis De Broglie Prince Louis Victor Pierre Raymond de Broglie, later 7th duke de Broglie (pronounced debroy in French), was born at Dieppe, France, on August 15, 1892. http://www.physchem.co.za/scientists/debroglie.htm
Extractions: Prince Louis Victor Pierre Raymond de Broglie, later 7th duke de Broglie (pronounced "debroy" in French), was born at Dieppe, France, on August 15, 1892. He came from a distinguished family of the French nobility, which included diplomats and soldiers. His brother Maurice, 6th duke de Broglie, was a noted physicist. Louis was educated at the Sorbonne, where he became Professor in 1932. The work he carried out for his doctoral thesis, published in 1924, dealt with aspects of the quantum theory and led him to prove mathematically that all moving particles behaved as waves, thus reconciling the dual nature of light. He obtained the Nobel prize for Physics in 1929. In 1927, two independent groups of investigators proved de Broglie' theory experimentally. de Broglie received many honours for his work, notably, he became a Member of the French Academy in 1944 and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1953. He died at Louveciennes on March 19, 1987.
