Extractions: Richard Dooling by Richard Dooling on July 11, 2010 in Great Books I spent my undergrad years painting dorm rooms to pay my tuition and graduated from college in 1976. I then decided it was high time to get an education, so I set about reading all of the books that I never had time to read while I was a working student. I lined the walls of a one-bedroom apartment in midtown Omaha with concrete-block-and-board shelves and soon amassed a formidable library of trade paperback books. H Lonely Planet guide to be consulted during a two-week trip to Morocco, it was a manifesto to be read before leaving for months, or years. (If memory serves, the epigraph at the start of Traveling Cheaply Traveling Cheaply I intended to purge myself of earthly belongings and wander the world unfettered. I Brain Storm ). These books are often annotated, highlighted, underlined, because I usually have a pen or pencil in hand when I read. Now comes the sad part. To this day, I wander to the basement (where most of the books from the 80s and 90s take up the better part of a long wall) looking for, say, , by Saul Bellow, only to realize after 15 or 20 minutes of searching that In Defense of The Memory Theater , where he describes the sensation of searching for a lost book: What suddenly became most evident were the absences, the missing books I could hazily remember having read and digested, yet which would need referring to again. They had turned, terrifyingly, into phantom limbs.

A Discussion with Richard North Patterson Whether fans who've read every single one of Richard North Patterson's legal thrillers are luckier than people who've never read his books is debatable. His readers, book after book, are never disappointed, and eagerly await each of Patterson's forthcoming international best-sellers. Yet, those who've deprived themselves of the pleasure of reading his compelling thrillers have a dozen novel surprises to look forward to! Prior to beginning his multiple award-winning writing career, Patterson studied creative writing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. ERNST We report for the first time an experimental realization of a 'quantum time- translation machine' via superpositions of time evolutions as suggested by Aharonov, Anandan, Popescu and Vaidman (1990, phy.7. Rev. Lett., 64, 2965). The physical system consists of two coupled spins 1/2 and the amplifica- tion scheme is applied to the heteronuclear coupling between the two spins. We give a simple explanation of the phenomenon and suggest possible classical analogues. In a recent communication (l), Aharonov and coworkers introduced a new notion: 'a superposition of time evolutions (rather than of states) of a quantum system'. These superpositions are created by coupling a quantum mechanical system S to an external quantum mechanical system I in such a way that the time evolution of system S depends on the state of system I. During a short time, the two coupled systems magnetic field whose strength depends on a quantum mechanical space coordinate. In our experiment, the strength of the

Extractions: Awards: 2 Oscar, 1 BAFTA, 1 Emmy Nominations, Won 1 Golden Globe It's been a long time since we saw a Hollywood superstar with a reputation for raising hell. Nicolas Cage dabbled a little, so did Leonardo DiCaprio Mickey Rourke , well, he wasn't quite a superstar, was he? No, hellraising seems to be a thing of the past, and we look back with great fondness to the Sixties and Seventies, when cinematic giants could deliver Oscar-nominated performances by day and knock back litres of hard liquor by night - giants like Richard Burton and Richard Harris. Both were immensely talented and charismatic and, though Burton topped Harris in the Nomination stakes, Harris could boast an extraordinarily successful pop career. And, of course, Harris survived those years of excess, re-scaled those Hollywood heights at the age of 60, and remained a megastar till the end of his days... Harris left school to work in the Mount Kenneth flour mill his family had run for generations. His was a famous name in Limerick. His forefather, James Harris, had been the Secretary of the Harbour Board, as well as a Market Trustee, and a shareholder in the Commodore, a (Catholic) riverboat that would regularly run against the Privateer, a Protestant-owned vessel. James had furthermore earned respect when, in 1868, he'd saved the French aeronaut Chavalier, whose balloon was holed while he attempted an ascent from a yard in Roche's Street. James offered the use of his own, bigger yard at Steamboat Quay, and Chavalier took successfully to the sky.
