In the general chemistry laboratory of the Sciences Faculty in Lyon he was able to prepare the so called organomagnesium halides for the synthesis of new organic compounds. Grignard presented his work as his doctor's thesis (1901). Grignard reagents were used in all directions. The usefulness of the device was such that in 1910 he received a professorship in chemistry at the University of Nancy and of Lyon in 1919. In 1912 Grignard shared the Nobel Prize with Sabatier. Barbier, il met au point et développe une réaction, dite depuis réaction de Grignard, qui revêt une très grande importance pour la synthèse de composés organiques : par action de composés organomagnésiens (réactifs de Grignard) sur les aldéhydes et les cétones, il obtient des alcools, des hydrocarbures. Cette réaction a ouvert de larges perspectives de découverte de nouveaux composés de synthèse. Grignard obtient son doctorat à Lyon en 1901, est chargé de cours à Besançon, puis revient à Lyon en 1906. Il y est nommé professeur en 1908, va à Nancy l'année suivante et retourne en 1919 à Lyon, où il termine sa vie. Il a reçu le prix Nobel de chimie en 1912. Chemically, a Grignard reagent is an organic magnesium halide dissolved in a nonreactive solvent (typically dry ethyl ether). The substance is made up of an organic group, e.g., an alkyl or aryl group, joined by a highly polar covalent bond (see chemical bond ) to magnesium, while the magnesium is joined by an ionic bond to a halogen ion, e.g., bromide or iodide. A Grignard reagent will react with water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, or almost any electrophilic organic compound. The reaction of Grignard reagents with aldehydes to form alcohols is of particular importance in the laboratory. Because Grignard reagents are so unstable, they are generally prepared just before use by reacting an organic halide, e.g., methyl iodide, with magnesium metal in a completely dry solvent; air is usually excluded from the reaction vessel, e.g., by flushing it with nitrogen. Grignard reagents are named after Victor Grignard , a French chemist, who received a Nobel Prize (1912) for their discovery.
