Professor Heeger and his colleagues at the University of California, Santa Barbara, have done pioneering research in the area of semiconducting and metallic polymers. His current interests are focused on light emission from semiconducting polymers, including photoluminescence, light-emitting diodes, light-emitting electrochemical cells, and lasers. The MRL seed project (with Prof. S. DenBaars as co-PI) involves the development of hybrid structures of LEDs and lasers; in these hybrid structures the InGaN LED is used either to pump the photoluminescence from conjugated polymers for generation of white light (and high brightness LEDs of all colors) or to pump polymer lasers and thereby create a class of electrically pumped diode lasers with colors that span the visible spectrum. Extractions: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Organic photovoltaic devices (OPVs) are fabricated from thin films of organic semiconductors , such as polymers and small-molecule compounds, and are typically on the order of 100 nm thick. Because polymer based OPVs can be made using a coating process such as spin coating or inkjet printing, they are an attractive option for inexpensively covering large areas as well as flexible plastic surfaces. A promising low cost alternative to silicon solar cells, there is a large amount of research being dedicated throughout industry and academia towards developing OPVs and increasing their power conversion efficiency. Combining the physical and chemical characteristics of conjugated polymers with the high conductivity along the tube axis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) provides a great deal of incentive to disperse CNTs into the photoactive layer in order to obtain more efficient OPV devices. The interpenetrating bulk donorâ€“acceptor heterojunction in these devices can achieve charge separation and collection because of the existence of a bicontinuous network. Along this network, electrons and holes can travel toward their respective contacts through the electron acceptor and the polymer hole donor. Photovoltaic efficiency enhancement is proposed to be due to the introduction of internal polymer/nanotube junctions within the polymer matrix. The high electric field at these junctions can split up the excitons, while the single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) can act as a pathway for the electrons.

My mother was born in Omaha (Nebraska); she was a first generation child of Jewish immigrants. My mother and father were married in the midst of the Great Depression. My early years were spent in Akron (Iowa), a small midwestern town of 1000 people, approximately 35 miles from Sioux City. I went to elementary school in Akron. My brother, Gerald, was born in Akron. My father was the manager and, subsequently the owner, of a general store that served the local farming community. I have a strong memory of the day I was told that my father had a weak heart and that he had to go to the hospital. He died when I was nine years old on the same day that Franklin Roosevelt died; it was his 45th birthday. After my father's death, we moved to Omaha, so my mother could be closer to her family. She raised us as a single parent in a house that we shared with her sister and her sister's children.
