Il a occupé ensuite des postes importants auprès de l'Etat-Major de la R.A.F., ce qui lui a valu la Wing Comrnander R.A.F. Après la guerre, il revient à Cambridge, au Laboratoire Cavendish, et décide d'entreprendre des recherches sur la structure des protéines. C'est à cette époque qu'il commence à travailler en collaboration avec Max Perutz , sous la direction de Sir Laurence Bragg. Il soutient son Ph. D. en 1949 et son Sc. D. en 1952. Pendant de longues années ses recherches sont subventionnées par plusieurs organismes, comme le Davy-Faraday Laboratory of the Royal Institution ou la Royal Society.
