Dr. Hall was recognized for his "contributions to the development of laser-based precision spectroscopy, including the optical frequency comb technique." In 2006 he received an honorary degree from Carnegie Mellon. Hall began his career at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a National Research Council postdoctoral fellow in 1961. He joined the NIST staff as a physicist in 1962, and was named a senior scientist in 1971. Hall has been affiliated with the University of Colorado-Boulder physics department since 1966, retired from NIST in 2004 and currently is a senior research associate at JILA.
