Extractions: Publication Number: ; Advisor: Ting, Samuel C. C. Bibliographic Code: Abstract The pi o ,/ /eta, and omega meson productions have been studied using 3 million hadronic Z events recorded with L3 detector at LEP. The meson production in the final sample, two-jet and three-jet event samples as well as in each jet have been measured and compared with the JETSET and HERWIG Monte Carlo predictions. The momentum distributions are measured and compared with Monte Carlo prediction and analytical coherent QCD prediction. The momentum distributions in each jet are also measured and compared with Monte Carlo prediction. The eta production in gluon enriched jet is observed to be enhanced comparing with Monte Carlo model predictions, especially for high momentum /eta. On other aspects, the measured production agree with model predictions. (Copies available exclusively from MIT Libraries, Rm. 14-0551, Cambridge, MA 02139-4307. Ph. 617-253-5668; Fax 617-253-1690.)

Interviews were conducted in Lindau, Germany, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere in the United States. The video documentation subsequently formed the core of the Nobel Voices Video History Project and the exhibition Nobel Voices: Celebrating 100 Years of the Nobel Prize . The interviewees were asked about their motivations, visions for the future, and opinions on the nature of creativity and innovation. In the interviews, the laureates speak about their passion for their work, their childhood inspirations, the spirit of discovery, and the personal meaning of the Nobel Prize.

Stanford Professor Steven Chu graduates to the rank of Nobel laureate BY BERT ELJERA When Professor Steven Chu got the early morning phone call last week informing him that he had won a share of the Nobel Prize in physics, his first reaction was one of overwhelming relief. After his breakthrough work in 1985 on cooling down atoms with laser lights, Chu became what is known as "PNL," or pre-Nobel laureate. He was, in effect, a Nobel Prize-winner-in-waiting. But that wait can seem like forever. Chu has friends who have waited 20 years to get the prize, and some have not received it at all. "You expect to graduate from college, but no one really has the right to expect the Nobel Prize," he said from his home in Palo Alto, Calif. "If you get it, keep calm." Now, he can move on, he said.
