Although he won the Nobel Prize for his work in immunology , Tonegawa is a molecular biologist by training. In his later years, he has turned his attention to the molecular and cellular basis of memory formation. Tonegawa is best known for elucidating the genetic mechanism in the adaptive immune system. To achieve the diversity of antibodies needed to protect against any type of antigen, the immune system would require millions of genes coding for different antibodies, if each antibody was encoded by one gene. Instead, as Tonegawa showed in a landmark series of experiments beginning in , genetic material can rearrange itself to form the vast array of available antibodies. Comparing the

Although he failed the first time, he succeeded the second time and was admitted in 1959. At this time, Japan was one year away from renewing a 10-year defense treaty with the United States. College students rallied in with their opinions and demonstrations, some causing so many disturbances that classes at Kyoto University were often cancelled. When Japan decided to renew the treaty, Tonegawa and other students felt a sense of defeat. In this atmosphere, Tonegawa abandoned his original major and decided to pursue the academic life. Studied Molecular Biology in California Tonegawa served as a research assistant at the University of California in 1963, then as a teaching assistant from 1964 to 1968.
