In 1916, “Einstein came back once more to blackbody radiation and made further progress. In November 1916 he wrote to Besso: ‘A splendid light has fallen on me about the absorption and emission of radiation’. His reasoning is divided into three papers, two of which appeared in 1916 [1] and the third one early in 1917 [2]. [Note: the two papers in this collection- one from 1916, one from 1917- are the two cited by Weil as “principal works”; the third paper- the second from 1916- is not.] In these papers, which we may consider as his most important contribution to quantum theory, Einstein proposed a statistical theory of the interaction between atoms and photons, gave a new demonstration of Planck’s radiation theory and introduced the concept of ‘stimulated emission’, providing the basis for the discovery of masers and lasers…” (Bertolotti

Advantages and disadvantages for microwave and IR or optical wavelengths are explored. A rough comparison of the amount of power needed for interstellar communications in the two cases of microwave and optical or IR wavelengths is given. The issues of what background radiation besides that of stars may be present and interfere with communications is addressed. A plot of the general power background per unit bandwidth in interstellar space, and a numerical comparison of the background flux of radiation as a function of wavelength are presented.
