Extractions: Walton studoval matematiku a experimentln fyziku na Trinity College v Dublinu, jadernou fyziku na Trinity College v Cambridge. Zde spolupracoval s Cockcroftem ve slavn Cavendishov laboratoi.. V dubnu roku 1932 sestrojil s Cockcroftem zazen postaven ze sklennho vleku, vakuovch trubic a autobateri a tohoto zazen vyuili k urychlen proton. Urychlenm svazkem proton bombardovali terk z lithia. Jdra lithia roztpili na dva atomy helia. Ukzali tak mimodn vznam urychlova pro jadernou fyziku. V roce 1934 se Walton vrtil na Trinity College do Dublinu jako vedouc katedry fyziky. Extractions: Using the proton beam to bombard lithium, Walton and Cockcroft observed the production of large quantities of alpha particles, showing that the lithium nuclei had captured the protons and formed unstable beryllium nuclei which instantaneously decayed into two alpha particles travelling in opposite directions. They detected these alpha particles with a fluorescent screen. Later they investigated the transmutation of other light elements using proton beams, and also deuterons (nuclei of deuterium) derived from heavy water.
