This marked the beginning of our twenty year collaboration.

Life ( pneuma , i.e. breath) takes three forms: the brain forms the center of sensory perceptions and movement; the heart regulates blood and body temperature and the liver is the center of nutrition and metabolism. On epilepsy he writes: " In all forms it is the brain which is diseased; either the sickness originates in the brain itself,... or it rises in sympathy into the brain from the cardiac orifice of the stomach... Seldom, however, it can have its origin in any part of the body... and then rises to the head in a way which the patient can feel... "

Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, NY), AB(Rockefeller University, New York), AC(Rockefeller University, New York), AD(Rockefeller University, New York), AE(Rockefeller University, New York) Publication: Bibliographic Code: Abstract Some intrinsic changes in the optical properties of cortical tissue are known to be dependent on electrical or metabolic activity. It is shown here that these changes can be used to study the functional architecture of the cortex. Optical maps of whisker barrels in the rat and the orientation columns in the cat visual cortex, obtained by reflection measurements of the intrinsic signal, were confirmed with voltage-sensitive dyes or by electrophysiological recordings. In addition, an intrinsic signal originating from small arteries is described which can be used to investigate the communication between local neuronal activity and the microvasculature. One advantage of the method is that it is noninvasive and does not require dyes, a clear benefit for clinical applications.
