Born in Austria, he spent most of his life in Germany and Israel, writing in German and Hebrew. He is best known for his 1923 book, Ich und Du I and Thou) , which distinguishes between “I-Thou� and “I-It� modes of existence. Often characterized as an existentialist philosopher, Buber rejected the label, contrasting his emphasis on the whole person and “dialogic� intersubjectivity with existentialist emphasis on “monologic� self-consciousness. In his later essays, he defines man as the being who faces an “other� and constructs a world from the dual acts of distancing and relating. His writing challenges Kant, Hegel, Marx, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Dilthey, Simmel and Heidegger, and he influenced Emmanuel Lévinas. Buber was also an important cultural Zionist who promoted Jewish cultural renewal through his study of Hasidic Judaism. He recorded and translated Hasidic legends and anecdotes, translated the Bible from Hebrew into German in collaboration with Franz Rosenzweig, and wrote numerous religious and Biblical studies. He advocated a bi-national Israeli-Palestinian state and argued for the renewal of society through decentralized, communitarian socialism. The leading Jewish adult education specialist in Germany in the 1930s, he developed a philosophy of education based on addressing the whole person through education of character, and directed the creation of Jewish education centers in Germany and teacher-training centers in Israel.

My argument is that the notion of a social epistemology can be found in later medieval thought in the attempt to construct a theory of scientia that weakens, along various dimensions, the very strict requirements of the Aristotelian framework as set out in the Posterior Analytics . The resultant accounts move away from epistemology conceived of as ideal theory, toward a conception that is relevant to ordinary folk in their everyday lives. It is important to distinguish between two ways in which God might be timelessly eternal: eternality as being wholly outside of time, versus the sort of timelessness that consists in lacking temporal parts, and so existing “all at once.” A prominent but neglected historical tradition, most clearly evident in Anselm, advocates putting God in time, but in an all-at-once sort of way that makes God immune to temporal change. DAN LEON, who lives in Jerusalem, is co-managing editor of the Palestine-Israel Journal of Politics, Economics, and Culture, the first joint quarterly, now in its fifth year. The assassination of Mahatma Gandhi and the establishment of the state of Israel were separated by about half a year (January and May 1949). Writing in 1938, Gandhi had not been sympathetic to the Jewish national home in Palestine since he thought that "Palestine belongs to the Arabs in the same sense that England belongs to the English or France to the French. Why should [the Jews] not, like other peoples of the earth, make that country their home where they are born and earn their livelihood"? Martin Buber, My Way to Hasidism [1] MORDECAI MARTIN BUBER, THE FOREMOST OF MODERN Jewish thinkers known to the world at large, was born in Vienna in 1878. At the age of three, when his mother disappeared without a trace, he was sent to live with his grandparents in Lvov, where he and his grandfather, Solomon Buber, a scholar of the Haskalah, the Jewish Enlightenment, prayed with the hasidim. At eighteen Buber entered the University of Vienna where he became interested in religion, especially Christian mysticism; Buber's doctoral dissertation, "From the Problem of Individuation: Cusanus and Boehme," focused on Cusanus, a Catholic Cardinal and mathematician who, like the mystic Boehme, revealed the limitations of reason. Also in these early years Buber's driving interest was Zionism. He had a close working relation with Chaim Weitzman and his Paths in Utopia [2] reflects his continuing positive view of Kibbutz socialism. In 1906, Buber published his Tales of Rabbi Nachman and two years later his Legend of the Baal Shem. In due course, these first literary projections of Hasidism were followed by essays on the meaning of Hasidism for modern man. It is his work on Hasidism that brought him popular fame. Buber's rather romantic presentations of hasidism pierced the non-Jewish world as a spiritual possibility. They show Buber's understanding of the Jewish love of God, which needless to say to some, is the deepening of the love one has for one's fellow man.

    Extractions: Modern Judaism Martin Buber's Mystery Play Elijah Maurice Friedman Although Martin Buber's "mystery play" Elijah was not written until 1956 and was not published in German until 1963, Buber's active interest in writing a play on Elijah dates back to 1901 and the Jewish Renaissance Movement, which he saw as the central thrust of the cultural Zionism which he espoused. Two of the poems which he published on Elijah in that period seemed to Buber of sufficient lasting worth to be taken up into his Nachlese , or "gleanings," prepared just before his death. Both poems transcend the realm of culture in the direction of genuine religious intimations, through intimations informed by the Nietzschean vitalism and the immanentist, becoming-of-God mysticism that permeated Buber's being at that period. Elijah , composed forty years later: The cognizance of inner duality and the immanent demand for decisionthat is, of the soul's unificationdivided the people into two [End Page 135] psychologically distinct factions: one consisted of persons who choose, who make decisions, who are impelled toward unconditionality and are dedicated to their goal; the other of laissez-faire men, decisionless persons, persons who remain indolently inert in their conditionality, and whose aim is self-aggrandizement and self-satisfactionor, in biblical terms, persons who are servants of God, and persons who are servants of Baal. It should be remembered, however that those persons do not by any means decide for Baal and against God, but that, as stated by Elijah, they "hobble along on two tree-limbs" (1 Kings 18:21).
