Al igual que Hobbes , estudió en Oxford sin adherir a la filosofía de los escolásticos que allí imperaba. Su trabajo al servicio de Lord Hasley le permitió visitar Francia e incluso residir por un tiempo allí, donde entró en contacto con el círculo de Gassendi (atomismo naturalista). Entre 1675 y 1679 permaneció en Francia y entre 1683 y 1689 residió en Holanda . Retornó a su patria con la llegada al trono de Guillermo de Orange, en 1689. John Locke nació en Wrington (cerca de Bristol Inglaterra , el 29 de agosto de 1632. Se educó en la Westminster School y en la Christ Church de Oxford . En se convirtió en tutor y profesor de Griego y Retórica. Más tarde volvió a Oxford y estudió medicina La fama de Locke era mayor como filósofo que como pedagogo . Prácticamente todo el pensamiento posterior fue influenciado por su empirismo, hasta desembocar en el escepticismo de Hume . En lo pedagógico, Locke no pretendió crear un sistema educativo, sino explicar los lineamientos de la educación para los hijos de la nobleza, por consiguiente sus ideas representan tanto un reflejo de la percepción pedagógica de su tiempo como una reflexión profunda sobre sus bondades, defectos y alcances. Auteur Français English Dans cet article, on montre que l’hypothèse de la « matière pensante » introduite spéculativement dans le livre IV de l’Essai sur l’Entendement humain This paper aims to show that the « thinking matter  » hypothesis, which Locke introduces in the fourth book of the Essay as mere speculation, should not only be considered as an epistemological device employed to point out the limitations of human knowledge, but also tells something important about Locke’s true metaphysical inclinations. Though it is impossible to obtain any knowledge about the true nature of thinking substances, one is nevertheless allowed to frame one’s own opinion about it. Locke always considered the making and regulating of sound belief to be legitimate aims of human reason, especially when knowledge is impossible and when the topic is of great human concern, as the nature and destination of the soul evidently is. Locke scholars generally agree that, despite the thinking matter hypothesis, the author of the Essay was some sort of a Cartesian dualist, holding that the immateriality of the soul is highly probable. This article offers critical examination of the passages in Locke’s works that are usually produced in favor of such a thesis. I show that these texts not only provide no conclusive evidence for the immateriality of the human soul, but could be construed as prudent suggestions supporting the opposite thesis. That Locke believed in the probable materiality of the human soul becomes even more plausible when one considers the doxastic import of the various independent arguments offered in support of the conceivability of the thinking matter hypothesis in the third Letter to Stillingfleet : the hypothesis does not contradict the biblical message ; it allows an easier conception of the great chain of beings ; it best meets the ontological requirements of identity and existence.

    Extractions: Son ouvrages Deux traités de gouvernement civil paraît en 1690. Il s’agit d’une apologie de la révolution de 1688 et d’une critique vigoureuse de la monarchie absolue. L’idée développée est la nécessaire subordination de l’activité des gouvernants au consentement populaire. Locke est le théoricien du libéralisme politique ; ses thèmes fondamentaux sont : Le premier traité est une réponse au Patriarcha de Filmer qui prétendait démontrer le droit des princes au gouvernement absolu en assimilant la souveraineté à la domination primitive d’Adam sur le monde ; cette domination a été retransmise aux monarques. Le second traité vise à établir l’origine, les limites et les fins véritables du pouvoir civil. Ces deux traités forment un tout. La réfutation de la thèse de Filmer (les hommes ne sont pas nés libres mais esclaves) dans le premier traité permet, dans le second, de fonder la limitation dues gouvernements sur l’idée de la liberté et de l’égalité naturelles. Peu importe si vous portez attention ou non aux actualités, il n’en reste pas moins que bon nombre des principes régissant l’analyse sociale, politique, économique, juridique, technologique, médicale et j’en passe, découlent de l’apparition au XVII e siècle d’un courant révolutionnaire de pensée, l’empirisme. En Europe occidentale, les savants de l’époque ont enfin compris que l’homme naît ignorant de tout ce que ses aînés tiennent pour sacré, vrai, juste, idéal. Au cœur du renouveau au Royaume-Uni, un personnage plutôt frêle, John Locke. Il finira ses jours paisiblement après avoir vigoureusement secoué plusieurs idéologies de sa société. Vous devez savoir que ceci se déroule au XVII e siècle, une époque turbulente partout en Europe. En Angleterre, Charles 1 er tente sans succès d’imposer un régime absolutiste, les nobles et bourgeois sont révoltés, la couronne tire le diable par la queue. La guerre civile éclate, le roi se réfugie en Écosse mais il sera vendu et décapité. Un dictateur s’installe à sa place. C’est le “protectorat” de Oliver Cromwell, dont le régime sanglant s’éteindra avec lui. La noblesse revient au pouvoir avec Charles II, sans succès, ni davantage pour son frère Jacques II qui s’attire rapidement la colère de la population. Les chicanes de clocher brisent le royaume, chacun essayant de justifier sa prétention au pouvoir par l’interprétation du droit et de la Bible. Le peuple, frappé par la persécution religieuse, la guerre civile, la tyrannie, la famine, la maladie, et à Londres par un gigantesque incendie, en a soupé de ses têtes dirigeantes. Locke est témoin du chaos total qui engouffre son pays, et interviendra souvent dans une foule de domaines s’y rattachant de près ou de loin.

Locke's two most important works, Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Two Treatises on Civil Government ( .txt-only version of Second Treatise ), both published in 1690, quickly established him as the leading philosopher of freedom. In the Essay he opposed the rationalist belief in innate ideas, holding that the mind is born a blank upon which all knowledge is inscribed in the form of human experience. He distinguished the primary qualities of things (e.g., extension, solidity, number) from the secondary qualities (e.g., color, smell, sound), which he held to be produced by the direct impact of the world on the sense organs. The primary qualities affect the sense organs mechanically, providing ideas that faithfully reflect reality; thus science is possible. Later empiricists such as Hume and George Berkeley based their systems largely on Locke's theory of knowledge. In political theory he was equally influential. Contradicting Hobbes , Locke maintained that the original state of nature was happy and characterized by reason and tolerance; all human beings were equal and free to pursue "life, health, liberty, and possessions."
