Extractions: Hidden Waters Appaloosas In Europe, the spotted Appaloosa Horses appear periodically throughout history. The Lippizzander Horse exhibited the mottled skin of the Appaloosa in the 16th-18th centuries. These spots still crop up to this day. To North America Appaloosa Horses were introduced by the Spanish explorers. Their Andalusians often had spotted coats. Indians stole and traded them, and the spotted horses quickly spread northward. The Nez Perce Indian tribe of Oregon became sophisticated horsemen and selected the spotted breed. These horses were of an elegant race, lofty and durable. The spots helped to camouflage the horse and the rider, for the splashy patterns helped to break up the horses' outline and made it difficult to see from the distance. Appaloosas with flashy or unusual markings are valued the best. Indians used the Appaloosa Horse in buffalo hunting and in war. The horses had to possess strength, speed, courage and intelligence. The white settlers called the horses "a Palouse horse" after Palose country where Indians lived. Finally it became "Appalosa." During the war Appaloosa Horses were the reason the U.S. Calvary was deprived of victory for many months, because the Nez Perce fled over 1300 miles of rugged, almost impassible terrain. Afterwards nothing was done about these strong, intelligent Appaloosa Horses, and they were almost diminished to nothing.

In fact, Astronomy is a subject area belonging to the broader topic of Physics. Astronomy is a subset of Physics. Historically science has its roots in peoples' efforts to understand and explain the world and the universe around them of which they are a part. While many observations were made about phenomena here on earth, the heavens were also observed. People wanted to know what was going on and why. Their interest was born of concern and fear as well as curiosity. They wanted to feel some degree of control of their lives or at least be able to explain what was going on and why. Our collective knowledge about our environment, the earth and the sky, came about slowly through observation and interpretation of those observations. Knowledge was accumulated slowly in different societies and cultures. Sometimes the knowledge found was lost and only rediscovered much later. The history of western civilization from several thousand B. C. to the present is very much a story of discovery, disagreement, loss, and rediscovery. Early history of man involves very little ability to investigate more than could be observed with the senses. This resulted in people making up stories to explain phenomena for which they had no real understanding. This is not unlike stories made up to help little children deal with their every day experiences. Often adults won't try explain the physics principles behind a thunder storm to a frightened little child, even if they understood it themselves. Instead they make up a cute story to provide the child with something to explain a scary situation in terms of something less scary. As an example, in many Christian homes in western civilization the explanation often given to little children afraid of thunder storms was that the angels were bowling. The noise of the thunder was the noise of the bowling balls and the lightning was their using light to find the ball so they wouldn't lose it.

Although the college provided a predominantly classical education, natural philosophy (physics) and astronomy were taught to every student of the college from the earliest days. In the early years those subjects were taught by tutors and then by professors of mathematics and astronomy. The origins of the Department of Physics and Astronomy can be traced to the appointment of Francis C. Van Dyck as professor of physics in 1880. Professor Van Dyck was responsible for the physics program until his retirement in 1917. In those days the Physics Department was located in several rooms in Geology Hall. The first graduate student in physics was enrolled in 1883 and the first graduate student in astronomy in 1892. Astronomy continued to be the responsibility of a professor of mathematics and astronomy until 1932 when it was taken over by a professor of physics. In 1926 the Physics Department moved into a new building, named in honor of Francis C. Van Dyck. In 1929 Robert d'E. Atkinson joined the department. An astrophysicist, Atkinson published seminal papers on the synthesis of elements in stars, and took over the teaching of the undergraduate courses in astronomy. The first Ph.D. in physics was awarded in 1935 to Donald Hill.
