   Extractions: Definition: The German word Gestalt literally means "configuration" or "figure" and is used to refer to any general pattern which manifests characteristics different than are inherent in its parts. For example, a musical piece has a Gestalt because the tune and melodies are characteristics which it has, but which none of the individual notes have. Similarly, a sentence has a Gestalt because it has a characteristic of its meaning which none of the individual words or letters have. These characteristics of the whole are called emergent properties or supervenient properties. The concept of Gestalt is used in a theory when it attempts to treat its subjects as unified wholes because any attempt to simply deal with the parts will mean that vital properties of the whole will go unattended. For example, Gestalt psychology attempts to study human behavior as a whole phenomenon because individual aspects of the mind or consciousness would not be the same thing. The movement which lead to the creation of Gestalt Theory grew out of dissatisfaction with the more traditional atomistic methodology in science. Beginning in the 1920s (although there were precedents which can be found even earlier), some philosophers and psychologists questioned the common methodological presuppositions which dictated that the study of any phenomenon had to proceed by breaking it down into constituent parts. Anything which could not be broken down could not be studied scientifically - as a result, important aspects of human experience were left to more mystical and religious explanations.

    Extractions: Submit your own review or read other reader reviews Gestalt is another fantasy/comedy offering from Anime Works, and it comes as no coincidence that I find myself reviewing it shortly after Elf Princess Rane . While Elf Princess Rane was completely off-the-wall in terms of silliness, Gestalt is a somewhat more traditional offering with many of the requisite fantasy elements. Gestalt is probably best compared with The Slayers , the best known fantasy/comedy series there is. Heck, Ohri is somewhat similar, if older, to Lina Inverse (now *there's* a duel I'd like to see). Gestalt is also rife with silly gags ranging from exaggerated expressions to pure slapstick. As a matter of fact, it includes one of the funniest sight gags I've seen in a fantasy anime yet: console RPG dialog. Now those that have never played a console RPG before won't be able to fully appreciate the joke, but I found it simply priceless. Regarding the characters, Ohri is a rather energetic sorceress with a slightly mysterious past and ability to whip around some seriously devastating magic. She's teamed up with the somewhat passive Father Olivier, who is undertaking a quest to reach the forbidden land of Gestalt. Alone the way they run afoul of various not-so-nice folks (including a couple dark elves) and the result is mass destruction on a grand scale. It's somewhat mindless fantasy fluff, but the makes up for it with a good dose of old-fashioned fun.
