More details, including screenshots and download links, are available at Golly's web site: http://golly.sourceforge.net/ System requirements Life-related links LifeLab is a Mac application for exploring John Conway's Game of Life and other cellular automata. CAs were first studied in the mid-1950s by Stanislaw Ulam and John von Neumann. The subject became much more widely known in 1970 when Life was described by Martin Gardner in his Scientific American column. Life is played on an arbitrary-sized grid of square cells. Each cell has two states: "dead" or "alive". The state of every cell changes from one "generation" to the next according to the states of its 8 nearest neighbors: a dead cell becomes alive (a "birth") if it has exactly 3 live neighbors; a live cell dies out if it has less than 2 or more than 3 live neighbors. The "game" of Life simply involves starting off with a pattern of live cells and watching it evolve. Even though the rules for Life are completely deterministic, it is impossible to predict whether an arbitrary starting pattern will die out, or start oscillating, or fill the grid. Life and other CAs provide a powerful demonstration of how a very simple system can generate extremely complicated behavior.

If a cellular automaton is invertible, it therefore is deterministic in both directions of time. The rule that makes a cellular automaton go backward is called the inverse rule opposite to the direct rule that runs the cellular automaton forward direction of time. In general, the inverse rule is different from the direct rule except for trivial cases shown in the following figure. The technique used here generating reversible cellular automata can be applied to all one-dimensional cellular automata; however, no general procedure is known to determine whether a certain rule has an inverse rule. Some techniques for constructing invertible cellular automata were presented by Toffoli and Margolus [4].

Today, it is becoming increasingly common for the composer to turn to the sciences to supplement his or her compositional models. By the same token, scientists also seem to show interest in the organisational principles to be found in music. Scientific models carry an important component of human thought, namely formal abstraction , which can be very inspiring for music composition. My research work attempts to identify a correlation among different disciplines such as biology, crystallography and computing in order to investigate the possibility of synthesising sounds and composing music inspired by this interdisciplinary framework. A class of mathematical models known as cellular automata plays a central role in my research. Cellular automata have been used to model a wide range of scientific phenomena. They have been studied and developed for over three decades. Although very simple, they can provide models for a wide variety of complex phenomena in a range of disciplines including physics (e.g., dynamic and chaotic systems), genetics and chemistry (e.g., chemical reactions and crystal growth).

The islands are impervious to power loss. View Slideshow For the first time, researchers have created a working prototype of a radical new chip design based on magnetism instead of electrical transistors. As transistor-based microchips hit the limits of Moore's Law, a group of electrical engineers at the University of Notre Dame has fabricated a chip that uses nanoscale magnetic "islands" to juggle the ones and zeroes of binary code. Wolfgang Porod and his colleagues turned to the process of magnetic patterning (.pdf) to produce a new chip that uses arrays of separate magnetic domains. Each island maintains its own magnetic field. Because the chip has no wires, its device density and processing power may eventually be much higher than transistor-based devices. And it won't be nearly as power-hungry, which will translate to less heat emission and a cooler future for portable hardware like laptops.

Extractions: Playing with real time Cellular Automata is as much fun as putting grapes, marshmellow peeps, peppermint patties, bars of soap, and alluminum foil in the microwave, but much easier to clean up, and don't smell bad! Cellular automata are simple rules that are applied to a grid of cells, or the pixel values of an image. The same rule is applied to every cell, to determine its next state, based on the previous state of that cell and its neighboring cells. There are many interesting cellular automata rules, and they all look very different, with amazing animated dynamic effects. "Life" is a widely known cellular automata rule, but many other lesser known rules are much more interesting! I've written code to play with real time animated cellular automata, that applies a bunch of rules to different parts of an image at once. You can create and delete different rules, move them around and resize them, throw them so they bounce around and leave trails, overlap them to mix their effects together, zoom into the cells and scroll around, and draw into the cells in real time with a few simple painting tools. These are some cellular automata images I've created: Cellular Automata Gallery with screen snapshots of my favorite rules!
