The answer to these and many other puzzling questions rests in the Second Law of Thermodynamics, in Entropy. The so-called Second Law relates closely to the term Entropy. An understanding of this fundamental law of nature and its ramification provides great insights in the way the world really works. Entropy, as expressed by the Second Law, is the ultimate Natural Law because it determines the flow of what we call "time". Thus, entropy deals with the very existence of the universe. The term entropy describes phenomena that have the most profound effect on all events in human existence, including our ability to achieve happiness by aligning ourselves with Objective Reality. The Second Law holds a unique position in science because it has never evolved from a theory such as the Theory of Relativity or the Theory of Quantum Mechanics. The Second Law is empirical. There is no fully satisfactory theoretical proof for the Second Law, although there are some connections to Quantum Mechanics, Probability and Relativity. Once a Unified Field Theory, the Theory of Everything, is developed, it will and must account for Entropy. Many scientists, who claimed that this Law is paradoxical in nature, have tried to attack it. However, in all instances the alleged paradoxes were due to faulty reasoning. The Second Law has prevailed and has established itself as the most fundamental of all Natural Laws.

Sometimes people say that life violates the second law of thermodynamics. This is not the case; we know of nothing in the universe that violates that law. So why do people say that life violates the second law of thermodynamics? What is the second law of thermodynamics? According to philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn, the second law was first put into words by two scientists, Rudolph Clausius and William Thomson (Lord Kelvin), using different examples, in 1850-51 . American quantum physicist Richard P. Feynman, however, says the French physicist Sadi Carnot discovered the second law 25 years earlier . That would have been before the first law, conservation of energy, was discovered! In any case, modern scientists completely agree about the above principles. The first opportunity for confusion arises when we introduce the term entropy into the mix. Clausius invented the term in 1865. He had noticed that a certain ratio was constant in reversible, or ideal, heat cycles. The ratio was heat exchanged to absolute temperature. Clausius decided that the conserved ratio must correspond to a real, physical quantity, and he named it "entropy".

In this area, it is particularly important to develop computationally aware methods and theories. In this sense, my research is at the frontier between the sciences of computing and statistics. I am particularly interested in combinatorics, algorithms and optimization, on the computing side, and in solving data analysis problems with many variables and combinatorial structure. INTRANSITIVITY IN CLASSIFICATION AND CHOICE It has been often noted that people's choices are not transitive: in other words, their preferences between K objects are not consistent with an ordering. Economic theory of choice has introduced various theories explaining how the observed intransitivity may arise. However, there is no work to date on how one may infer these models from data. Among the things I want to do: to formulate estimation problems for the hidden context and other models of intransitivity that are relevant to practical domains; to define when the model is identifyable (it may not be when the number of components K is large) and to design rigorously founded algorithms to estimate it. This problem is also of relevance to artificial systems, like multiclass classifiers. One common approach to deciding between K classes is to construct several binary classiffiers and then to combine their output. Since there often is no way to constrain the binary classifiers' otuputs to be consistent with an ordering, the problem is naturally one of dealing with intransitive ``preferences''. Joint work with
