This workshop consists of four talks intended to introduce central aspects of geometric group theory to a broad audience. We will discuss what is meant by `curvature' and `dimension' for discrete groups and describe the very different properties of groups of dimension two that have negative curvature as opposed to those that have non-positive curvature. Van Daele (Submitted on 18 Sep 2006 ( ), last revised 12 Apr 2007 (this version, v3)) Abstract: The Fourier transform, known in classical analysis, and generalized in abstract harmonic analysis, can also be considered in the theory of locally compact quantum groups. In this note, I discuss some aspects of this more general Fourier transform. In order to avoid technical difficulties, typical for the analytical approach, I will restrict to the algebraic quantum groups. Roughly speaking, these are the locally compact quantum groups that can be treated with purely algebraic methods (in the framework of multiplier Hopf algebras).

It contains an extensive discussion on general relativity from the viewpoint of group theory and gauge fields. It also puts together in one volume many scattered, original works, on the use of group theory in general relativity theory. There are twelve chapters in the book. Extractions: GRAHAM A. NIBLO’S HOMEPAGE My main research interests lie in the area of analytic, topological and geometric methods in group theory with applications in geometry. I have published several results concerning the splitting theory of discrete groups with related results concerning the structure of 3-manifolds. My most recent result in the area is joint work with Aditi Kar in which we derive a strong form of the torus theorem for certain splittings of high dimensional manifolds. My work with Lawrence Reeves laid the foundations for the study of group actions on CAT(0) cube complexes which has been applied by others working on the Baum-Connes conjecture and has come to prominence partly due to the recent results of Haglund and Wise showing that many important groups act on such spaces. This led to an extended study of Johnson’s characterisation of amenability with Jacek Brodzky, Piotr Nowak and Nick Wright. Current and recent projects are outlined below. Topological superrigidity (Joint work with Aditi Kar) Following our earlier work on splittings for Poincaré duality groups over a large class of lattices in Lie groups we discovered a new topological splitting theorem for high dimensional manifolds. In the statement a T-manifold is any closed manifold such that the universal cover is an irreducible globally symmetric Riemannian manifold of non-compact type, and which is one of the following: of real rank at least 2; quaternionic hyperbolic space; the Cayley hyperbolic plane.

Extractions: Society President: Michael Leyton (USA) The computational analysis of design is now a enormous discipline involving the interaction of high-level mathematics with advanced programming technologies. All design attempts to satisfy two constraints: functionality and aesthetics. Even a discipline as functionally oriented as structural engineering, in fact, involves aesthetic control over systems of non-linear equations. Aesthetics allows for (1) productive unification of perception, reasoning, and action, (2) understandability despite complexity, (3) generalization and re-usability, (4) axiomatic economy and principled prediction. Aesthetics is a major force in each of the following areas: Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing, Robot Motion Design: There has been considerable convergence in mathematics across the different types of CAD (e.g., in architecture and mechanical design), as well as manufacturing by shape-sculpting technology, and robot motion design. We note that Frank Gehry's Guggenheim museum at Bilbao was possible because James Glymph imported into architecture a major program designed by the French for aerospace engineering. The reason for the converging unity is that each of the several disciplines involves analysis of spatial systems of movement, control, and shape deformation - whose natural description is Lie algebras, tensor geometry with exterior differential calculus, and algebraic geometry.
