Key Staff Contact Us LCROSS IMPACT YIELDS TREASURE TROVE October 28, 2010 Six peer-reviewed scientific papers in the October 22 issue of SCIENCE represented initial analysis of results from the LCROSS lunar impact one year ago. Colaprete et al report that in the permanently shadowed region of Cabeus crater near the south lunar pole, water was detected at levels of 5.6 percent, with an uncertainty of 2.9 percent. LCROSS also detected methane, ammonia, hydrogen gas, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sodium and mercury. Bombardment of the lunar surface by comets and meteoroids could have delivered some of these volatiles and minerals. The scientific question of life on other worlds literally stretches back to the Renaissance, when Johannes Kepler, best known in astronomy for his trio of laws that define the paths of moons and planets, decided to unwind a little by writing a book called A Dream , in which he describes the inhabitants of the Moon, whose surface had just been revealed by Galileo. In spite of hopes, fears, and thousands of pages of science fiction, this mystery has never been truly solved, although tantalizing hints have surfaced as the years have passed: Organic compounds like methane are in the atmospheres of the giant planets of the outer solar system and of one of Saturn's moons, Titan. They are also found in comets, meteorites, and nebulae, the clouds of gas and dust from which stars and planets are formed. Simple forms of life can survive exposure to very harsh conditions. For instance, bacteria were found to have survived two years on the Moon in parts of Surveyor III which were brought back to Earth by the crew of Apollo 12.
