It was a reaction to the dominance of quantitative research methods in which a theory is formed then an empirical study is carried out to discover whether the hypothesis is proven. Grounded theory is the opposite: a theory is systematically verified by the collection and analysis of data. Any research has three major components: collecting data, interpreting data and producing research reports. In traditional research the theory is developed as a separate component before these three are tackled, and is not reviewed until the data has been collected and interpreted. In grounded theory research the theory is grounded in the data, which is to say that it is reviewed and revised as necessary at any point in the process. There are seven main features of grounded theory research.

Grounded Theory, as originally conceived, involves a continuous process for handling and interpreting qualitative data. The early emphasis on qualitative data, shifting from the previous reliance on quantitative data for sociological research methods(2), represents a paradigm shift ; however, both Glaser and Strauss later recognize the importance of also including quantitative data. According to Grounded Theory methodology, comparative analysis is used to generate a theory or theories and is in itself a research process. Grounded Theory is therefore viewed as an inductive method using an iterative process of constant comparison of data to generate theory. Glaser and Strauss outline the analytical procedure of constant comparison using the explicit coding of qualitative data jointly with analyzing data for new categories and hypotheses in order to generate theoretical ideas. The constant comparative method involves four stages: comparing incidents applicable to each category integrating categories and their properties delimiting the theory writing the theory Based on this original methodology, which Glaser later calls Classical Grounded Theory following a split between the two originators of the approach, the process begins by coding the data into as many categories as possible. Ideas and categories are refined as more instances of the same category code are found. Once the exhaustive categories are identified, the analysis focuses on understanding the emergent properties of the categories. Throughout this process categories are generally reduced or delimited and higher levels of concepts emerge. The combination of analysis, comparison, and integration of categories results in a new understanding of the topic of interest. Finally, a reasonably accurate theory emerges and can be written with confidence. Storberg-Walker emphasized that conceptual development was the most substantive and important component of the grounded theory-building research.(3)

The Discovery of Grounded Theory was meant to invite and motivate people to use the newly developed methodology. Unlike later works, it does not provide much advice on how to put the theory into practice. The authors had several goals in mind when writing the book: Legitimize qualitative research . Having a reference book by established authors helped students defend qualitative studies which were not widely accepted at the time.
