The collection began as a nucleus of research and teaching materials assembled by W. Frank Blair and his students in the Zoology Department; these were transferred to the (then) Texas Memorial Museum in 1950's. The holdings consist of about 63,000 catalogued specimens, which are used for research by faculty, staff and students at the University, as well as by qualified researchers throughout the world. The collection is also used for teaching courses (e.g., Vertebrate Natural History, Comparative Anatomy, and Herpetology) in Integrative Biology. David Cannatella , Curator Travis LaDuc , Assistant Curator Preserved Specimens Skeletons There are about 1300 catalogued skeletons, including 500 or so cleared and stained specimens. Cleared and stained skeletons, such as the one at shown here, are treated with an enzyme solution to dissolve muscle tissue, a red stain specific for bone, a blue stain specific for cartilage, and then cleared with a bleaching agent. The skeletons are stored in glycerine, which helps to render the muscle transparent. Dried skeletons are prepared using dermestid beetles, which eat away the muscle while leaving (hopefully) only the bones. The "bugged" skeletons are then treated to an ammonia bath (to rid them of any excess grease and smell) prior to storage.

Some jobs are working in zoos, museum curator or scientist, and/or working at wildlife agencies. Major jobs that a herpetologist could get are a professor or researcher at a college. This job has a salary of about $30,000 to $80,000 depending on the experience of the professor or researcher. Another job is a museum curator, this job has a salary of about $30,000 to $80,000, also depending on the experience of the person. A zoo curator or supervisor is another job that a herpetologist could get. The salary for a zoo curator is $30,000 to $50,000 once again depending on the experience of the person. And the final major job a herpetologist could get would be a breeder. Some minor jobs are a photographer, a writer, a high school teacher, and a few others.

Resources are available to scientists to help better understand amphibian and reptile biology and conserve species when their existence is threatened. The great diversity of amphibian and reptile species is preserved for scientific research in the form of alcohol-preserved and skeletal specimens. The herpetology collection holds over 70,000 catalogued individuals dating back to the 1890s. Over 57% of the collection comes from California and Baja California, making it one of the largest resources for this area. The collection is well represented with specimens from throughout the southwest United States, northwest Mexico, and islands worldwide. All cataloged specimens are computer databased which allows for any combination of taxonomic and geographic records to be searched. We are supported, in part, by the Laurence M. and Grace G. Respiration All reptiles breathe with lungs, and unlike amphibians, reptiles never pass through an embryonic stage involving gills. Skeletal Features All reptiles have backbones or spinal columns. Except for snakes, reptiles have paired limbs that typically end in five-clawed fingers or toes. Most reptiles have a pelvis that is associated with at least two spinal bones. Reproduction Most reptiles reproduce by laying eggs, although some give birth to live young that have hatched from eggs inside the mother's body. Most reptiles produce amniote eggs, which are able to survive outside of water. These eggs have complex membrane systems and protective shells that are permeable to oxygen and other gases.

We invite you to explore the diversity of Northwestern reptiles and amphibians in our online field guides; you'll see pictures of these fascinating species and learn about their habits. The herpetological collection at the Burke Museum contains 4,200 specimens of amphibians and reptiles, primarily from the Pacific Northwest; it is particularly strong in amphibians and garter snakes from this area. The more than 2,200 specimens in the cataloged collection are mostly forest-dwelling amphibians from Western Washington obtained during wildlife studies in the 1980s and early 1990s. About half the uncataloged material is garter snakes collected by William Hebard during the mid-1900s. The Society is devoted to stimulating and advancing the study of the history of the herpetological discipline and its bibliography. We bring together individuals for whom the history and bibliography of herpetology are appealing. We promote the knowledge of these and related topics among members and the general public. The Society was established in 1998. Membership is open to anyone who shares the aims of the Society. Activities. The society members meet every year, usually in connection with other general herpetological meetings with international participation. Activities include visits to private and public libraries, museums and other places with historical links to the discipline. We organize workshops and sessions in the fields that form parts of larger national or international meetings on herpetology. Courtesy of Erik Z. How many snapping turtles do you think you can find in the Bronx? Young Naturalist Awards For his award-winning study, Erik first identified four very different turtle habitats throughout the Bronx. Some habitats were in more developed areas while others were farther from human activity. He then set out to capture and collect data on snapping turtles at each location, carefully weighing and identifying the sex of each animal in addition to marking the carapace of each turtle he caught before releasing them. Erik’s analysis of the data showed that the population of turtles in each location was distinct and that the sex ratio differed widely depending on turtles’ proximity to humans.
