Artisotle called Thales of Miletus (ca. 585 BCE) the founder of physical science and wrote that Thales believed everything to be made of water. That wasn't so far-fetched, considering water can be solid, liquid, or gas in everyday experience. Artistotle himself, following his teacher Plato, thought that matter was based on four fundamental substances: earth, air, and fire, as well as water. In fact, Aristotle added a fifth essence, "quintessence", that supposedly resided in the celestial world. (The term has been adopted by some modern physicists and repurposed.) Other Greek philosophers took a different approach. Instead of trying to identify the essences of matter, they were content to view matter in terms of the ability to divide it into smaller and smaller units until some ultimate indivisible unit they called the "atom" was reached. Leucippus of Miletus (ca. 450 BCE) and (especially) his student Democritus are recognized for promoting this view. Leucippus and Democritus, of course, weren't that far off, in the view of modern physics. Except that what we now call atoms are known not to be indivisible. In the early 20th century it was recognized that atoms are made of even smaller particles electrons, protons, and neutrons. Somewhat later, in the 1960s, it became apparent that protons and neutrons were themselves composed of smaller particles quarks though electrons remained indivisible.

Professors Chen , Cochran, Crawley, Meyer, Prell and Rosenberg form the Ames High-Energy Physics Group. Past activities include the DELPHI detector at the CERN LEP site. Our current projects include the PEP-II BaBar detector at SLAC, and the ATLAS detector at the CERN LHC site. Professors Atwood and Valencia and are the faculty members doing phenomenological research in electroweak interactions within the standard model and beyond. Professor Whisnant does phenomenological research in neutrino physics. Drs. Carter-Lewis, Krennrich and Pohl do research in particle astrophysics. Extractions: Click here to go to the Physics Virtual Bookshelf. In the conventional view, "stuff" is made of atoms. The atoms are made of electrons, protons and neutrons. High Energy Physics deals with the question of what the electrons, protons and neutrons are made of. It is called "high energy" because experimentally one needs very high energy probes to try to take these "elementary particles" apart. This document is an overview of high energy physics at a non-technical level. It is divided into four sections: Some of the material presented is decidedly not traditional for an overview of High Energy Physics. Classically, we describe electron-electron scattering in terms of an electromagnetic field caused by one electron which causes a force on the second electron. The second electron similarly causes an electromagnetic field which causes a force on the first electron. Of course, we know that this field has a complementary particulate aspect, the photon. To the right we show a spacetime diagram for electron-electron scattering in this particulate view.

The High Energy Physics Advisory Panel (HEPAP) , originally established by the Atomic Energy Commission in 1967, provides advice on the national program to the DOE Office of High Energy Physics and the NSF Division of Physics. This panel meets several times a year and has played a major role in setting the direction of particle physics research in the U.S. Chartered by NSF, the Astronomy and Astrophysics Advisory Committee gives advice to the Office of High Energy Physics and NASA regarding its particle-astrophysics research program.
