It evolved in the second half of the 20th century partly in response to charges that traditional disciplines such as anthropology , history, English ethnology Asian studies , and orientalism were imbued with an inherently eurocentric perspective. Ethnic Studies was created to teach the stories, histories, struggles and triumphs of people of color on their own terms. In the United States , the field of Ethnic Studies evolved out of the civil rights movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s, which saw growing self-awareness and radicalization of people of color such as African-Americans Asian Americans Latino Americans , and American Indians . Ethnic Studies departments were established on many campuses and grew to encompass African American Studies Asian American Studies Raza Studies, Chicano Studies , and Native American Studies . Extractions: The National Association for Ethnic Studies regrets to announce the unexpected passing of our Vice President, Dr. Ashton W. Welch on August 14, 2010. All who knew him are deeply saddened by the loss of this stalwart member and dear colleague. Best known for his gentle and genteel manner, Ashton was admired as a mentor, scholar, and friend. In 2002, he was awarded the Irby Award for his significant contributions to the National Association for Ethnic Studies. Ashton was the Coordinator of the Program in Black Studies and Associate Professor of History at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Wilberforce University, the oldest African American private university in the United States. Subsequently, Ashton received a Masters degree in History and a Certificate in African Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Ph.D. from the University of Birmingham in England. Our 15 ladder-rank faculty members represent a range of disciplinary backgrounds from the humanities and social sciences. Most focus on one ethno-racial group or geographic area, but many have comparative foci, and all members of the faculty seek to provide collectively a comparative framework for understanding both the specificities and the differences among the situations of racially-marginalized groups in the US and beyond. Visitors to this website should consult the individual faculty pages for more information about research foci, but there are a number of broad themes that are strongly represented among faculty interests. These include transnational processes such as diaspora, immigration, border-making and territoriality, and refugees; political economy and colonial/postcolonial/neocolonial histories; resistance, intellectuals, and social movements; law and racial subjectivities; and race and spatiality. In 2003 the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences established the Ethnic Studies program to foster the development and growth of interdisciplinary programs The Ethnic Studies Program at the Ohio State University consists of American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, and Latino/a Studies. There are undergraduate minors in Asian American and Latino/a Studies. Currently under development is an undergraduate minor in American Indian Studies and graduate concentrations in Asian American Studies and Latino/a Studies. Courses in American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies and Latino/a Studies are available in various departments of the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences. These courses fulfill minor requirements as well as requirements for the undergraduate General Educational Curriculum.
