This interdivisional major and minor consist of courses drawn from a number of disciplines that relate to the analysis and transformation of conflict. Formal concentrations within the major are: interpersonal and intergroup conflict studies, religious and philosophical bases, and international and global studies. Students may also choose to design an individualized concentration within the major. Established in 1948, the Peace Studies Institute and Program for Conflict Resolution at Manchester College pioneered as the first undergraduate Peace Studies program in the United States. The curriculum offers a major in Peace Studies as well as a minor. The Peace Studies Institute sponsors public conferences and programs for the college and community on topics related to world peace and conflict resolution.

As a seminary of one of the three historic peace churches (Brethren, Friends, and Mennonites), Bethany features peace studies as a prominent part of its program. Peace-related courses cover topics ranging from non-violence and the biblical story, to peace witness in the Anabaptist tradition, to mediating conflict in families and churches, to peacemaking in national and international arenas. Undergirding the peace studies program is the Baker Peace Fund, a generous endowment provided by John and Elizabeth Baker, lifelong patrons of peace concerns. Resources generated by the Baker Peace Fund support both a faculty director and student coordinator for the program. These funds also bring noted peace leaders to the campus, and enable students and faculty to participate in workshops, conferences, and study tours which foster awareness of peace issues and develop peacemaking skills. Each student at Bethany takes at least one course in the area of peace studies, and many students join in a weekly

There are seven main categories that contribute to human security as defined by the UN in its Human development report in 1994.The seven categories are: Human security means safety for people from violent threats, such as organized conflict, gross violations of human rights, terrorism and violent crime. It also means safety from non-violent threats, such as environmental degradation, economic crises, illicit drugs, infectious diseases and natural disasters. Once the nature of the threat has been identified, several tools can be used to promote human security. Some tools rely chiefly on persuasion. Others are more robust-for instance, sanctions or military intervention.
