Ski Patrol The Biathlon program at Blackhawk has grown since starting in 2003-2004 and incorporates a 10 meter air rifle range. The range is adjacent to the Nordic Base Trail that benefits from manmade snow starting in late November to early December. There is also an effort underway to establish a practice area that will incorporate a 50 meter target for experienced biathletes. The biathlon program is geared to youth and adults who are interested in participating in and learning about biathlon. Youth who want to participate in biathlon will need to sign up for the Middle School or High School Cross Country Programs. Adults who want to try the sport should contact Mark Torresani by sending an email to the address below. Participants should have some previous experience and skills at cross country skiing and it is recommended they have their own ski equipment. Biathlon shooting instruction will be provided.

However, the term biathlon refers to the specific wintertime combination of skiing and rifle shooting. A summertime biathlon also exists, which comprises cross-country running and rifle shooting. This military training grew to include competitions. The first-known example was in 1767, and involved border guards from Norway and Sweden. At the second and fourth stops, shots were taken while the competitor was standing. Then, because aiming the rifle was more difficult, the target was larger; a 17.7-in (45 cm) outer ring with an inner ring of 13.7 in (35 cm) in diameter.
