Extractions: Broomball Study Guide The object and general play of broomball is very similar to the game of floor hockey. Team Composition: A team consists of 6 active players on the floor (five players and one goaltender). Substitutions during play are on the fly. When making substitutions, the player coming off the floor must be within arm's reach before the substitute enters the playing area. Time: A broomball game consists of two periods. Usually, the periods consist of two 15 minute, stop time periods, with a two minute break between periods. Each goal counts as one point. The team scoring the most points wins the game. Broomball can be played outdoors on ice or indoors on a gym floor. The Ball: Broomball is played with an inflated ball. The outer covering of the ball determines if it is used for outdoor ice or indoor gym floor play. The Broom: A player who has dropped his broom may participate without a broom until the next stoppage of play. A player may not throw or propel a broom across the ice/floor. (2-minute penalty) A broken broom is considered a dangerous piece of equipment. The player must drop the broom immediately. Playing with a broken broom – 2-minute penalty. Phy-Ed rule – the ball must always be hit with the flat part of the broom – not the edge.
